Food Security Program Coordinator
School is the center of the universe for many children. It’s where they learn, play, eat, make friends, discover role models, develop lifelong social skills, and find help if a crisis arises. These essential services cease to exist for vulnerable children when schools close for winter, spring and summer breaks. KidSafe serves more than 450 of Vancouver's most at-risk youth by providing a safe space, developmental care and nutrition to children ages 5-13 when school is not in session.
KidSafe is seeking a Food Security Program Coordinator to join our innovative, fast-paced Programs team.
The role: Reporting to the Program Manager, the Food Security Program Coordinator directly supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation of KidSafe’s Food Security Program by developing an enhanced training and support program for site food coordinators, implementing nutrition education programming for youth during break time, engaging families through cooking workshops and community dinners, and collaborating with food redistribution organizations to address barriers to food access for KidSafe families.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Training and support program for site food coordinators - break time
Improve break time onsite food program by developing an enhanced training and support program for site food coordinators
Develop nutritionally balanced menu plans and expand nutrition training and mentorship
Organize centralized bulk purchase of fresh food supply for KidSafe sites
Manage food security program budget and shopping needs for KidSafe sites
Lead training workshop with site food coordinators prior to the start of break time
Prepare site food coordinator binders and materials prior to the start of break time
Manage expense reconciliations and reporting post-break time
Nutrition education programming for KidSafe youth - break time
Develop and implement weekly cooking and nutrition education programming for KidSafe participants during break time, including exploration of new foods and development of cooking skills (1 class per site per week during break time)
Source materials and prepare take-home packages with ingredients and supplies needed to recreate recipes learned in weekly lessons (1 recipe package per child per week)
Source materials and package fresh food distribution for each KidSafe participant (1 fresh food package per child per week)
Family and community engagement - year-round
Develop and implement cooking workshops for parents and families (12 per year), incorporating topics such as cooking on a budget, safe food storage, etc.
Source materials and prepare take-home packages with ingredients and supplies needed to recreate recipes learned in cooking workshops
Establish community dinners at KidSafe sites (10 per year), providing the opportunity for families and youth to connect with each other, program staff, and organizational stakeholders
Collaborate and develop partnerships with food redistribution organizations
University degree, diploma, or certificate in a related field or experience and training in a related field
Experience working in the non-profit sector preferred
Experience in nutrition, food service, and/or youth education are assets, however are not necessary as many skills related to this position are transferable. This position requires someone with exceptional organizational and communication skills. This is a full-time, permanent position working 37.5 hours per week. This position requires occasional evenings and weekend work.
