JOB POSTING

Position: Organic Farm Worker
Type: full-time paid, May - October
Farm: Santosha Farm
Location: Burk’s Falls, ON (between Huntsville and North Bay), Ontario

Santosha Farm is a non-certified organic farm with a strong focus on ecological principles. The farm is 82 acres of meadow, wetland and forest. We have been expanding the farm for the past six years, and in 2019 we will be growing a mix of vegetables, berries, and edible flowers on 1.5 acres. After experimenting with sales techniques for four years, we sell at one farmer’s market and local resorts. We recently partnered with an amazing chef, and we have some exciting projects planned for 2019! In addition to the farm business, we will be building and launching an on-site cycling tour and winter adventure business which will be integrated with the farm.

This is a full-time paid position, 40 hours/week at $14/hour, from May to October. Evening and some weekend work will be required. We are looking for a serious applicant who is committed to helping us grow our farm and work co-operatively with us to contribute ideas and experiences. A positive attitude is a must. We have no on-site accommodation, but we would help inquire about local rental possibilities. You will need your own transportation.

Key activities:

  • Participating in health and safety training and maintaining a clean, safe working environment
  • Bed preparation and weeding
  • Seeding, planting, watering, harvesting, washing and packing vegetables
  • Assisting with setting up microgreen production
  • Helping improve farm systems
  • Participating in record keeping
  • Operating a walk-behind tractor and using various tools
  • Setting up a hoophouse and caterpillar tunnel
  • Equipment and infrastructure maintenance
  • Working closely with a chef and doing resort deliveries
  • Daily care of chickens, including moving mobile tractors, cleaning, bedding, feeding, and watering
  • Participating in preserving harvests for winter months (canning, freezing, fermenting)
  • Assisting with certain tasks associated with the cycling/winter adventure business, which may include ecological landscaping, property maintenance, basic building construction, food preparation

Qualifications/our expectations:

  • Minimum of one years' experience vegetable farming
  • Ability to work long hours in extreme weather and mosquitoes
  • Physical fitness, including standing, kneeling, bending and squatting for long periods of time
  • Attention to detail in producing and delivering high quality products
  • Excellent communication skills and self-awareness
  • Motivated, hard-working, and reliable
  • Ability to follow directions and a willingness to contribute ideas to improving farm processes and production
  • Ability to prioritize work in a constantly changing environment
  • Realistic about farming – a rewarding job that consists of heavy, physical labour and mundane tasks
  • A good sense of humour
  • Valid G class drivers licence

Challenges:

  1. Our farm is located between two small rural communities. It’s a beautiful but quiet place. You will need to be comfortable working independently.
  2. Mosquitoes! We have found that Carhartts, bug jackets, and a calm demeanor are the best way to deal with them.
  3. A short growing season.

Benefits: We live in a gorgeous area! If you love the outdoors, there are many opportunities for recreation. We live within a 20 minute drive to three boat launches and two public beaches. We are situated closely to Algonquin Park access points in Kearney and South River, and we are one hour from Parry Sound and access to Georgian Bay. We have a canoe, kayak, and an extra bike to share if you don’t have your own. There are two yoga practitioners in Burk’s Falls. The town of Huntsville is 40 minutes away, which is a larger town for entertainment.

Please forward your resume with a cover letter describing why you would be a good fit to: santoshafarm@gmail.com
