Type: volunteer + meals + optional tenting, more (see below)
Dates: minimum 2 weeks, between April and October 2020
Come join us between April and October at Camp Fircom's Eco retreat, educational center, farm, market garden, and orchard. Our methodology includes a hot composting system, managed crop rotation and mulching, companion planting, a passive solar greenhouse, a small but bountiful orchard, and most exciting of all, our flock much loved chickens! We are non-certified organic and off grid here on beautiful Gambier Island, and only a 20 minute water taxi ride from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver (approximately 1 hour public transit ride from downtown Vancouver)
Camp Fircom is part of the United Church of Canada and hosts summer camps, weddings, outdoor school, conferences and retreats. Fircom's core values are the environment, health and wellness, spirituality of all types, and foremost, education. Fircom began cultivating 1/2 an acre vegetable production and 1/4 acre of fruit trees from previously compacted barren soil. The farm processes more than three tonnes of organic waste annually into the rich fertile soil to provide a feast of vegetables, enabling a "30 meter diet".
Campers, outdoor school participants, wedding guests and private renters are invited to discover methods of sustainable crop production as Fircom volunteers teach the science behind food systems through 'hands in the dirt' experimental workshops. The farm and orchard are an attempt to achieve a harmonious partnership with the natural world. Much of the produce from the farm ends up in beautiful meals served by our fantastic kitchen team.
The Fircom farm accepts volunteers between April and October, working with farm staff for a minimum of two weeks, assisting in farm tasks and education programs.
Tasks include: tending to vegetable and fruit crops, caring for our lovely ladies in the chicken coop, building farm infrastructure, creating educational signage, maintaining the compost system (known as the reincarnation station), and preparing produce for camp or market use.
Volunteers are expected to spend 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, for a minimum stay of two weeks. A vulnerable sector criminal record check must be submitted before arrival, and alcohol and drugs are not permitted on site. In exchange, you will receive 3 meals per day from our camp kitchen (most dietary requirements can be accomidated), one return water taxi trip from Horseshoe Bay once per week on a scheduled run, space to set up your tent under the canopy of an old growth forest meters from camp, and access to a shared staff washroom. In your free time you can go kayaking, canoeing, hiking, snorkling, paddleboarding, archery, yoga, volleyball, or whatever quiet pursuit you enjoy. Cellphone reception is very good on site, however there is no wifi or landline phone access as we are totally off grid out here.
Come join a wonderful group of people spending the summer on Gambier Island growing food and connecting youth with organic farming!
