Position: Compost and Vermicompost assistant

Composting and Vermicomposting!

We have 3 shifts of volunteer opportunities available to assist the compost team in compost and vermicompost activities.

The shifts are:

  • Wednesday 10am to 2:30 pm - Mostly Compost activities (1 position available)
  • Thursday 10am to 2:30 pm - Compost and Vermicompost activities (1 position available)
  • Friday 10am to 2:30 pm - Mostly Compost activities (2 positions available)

Tasks may include (but are not limited to):

Compost activities and requirements:

  • Assist in weighing food waste
  • Record data properly
  • Monitor moisture and temperature of compost batches
  • Turn compost batches from one compost cell to the other
  • Sift and/or bag finished compost
  • Load compost cells with food waste, mixing with brown materials
  • Wash, prepare and restock green bins
  • Outdoor activities, heavy lifting (up to 50lbs) and physical work, using garden tools such as shovels and pitch fork.
  • Possible use of electric tools to build or fix composters
  • Keep work space and tools clean and organized
  • Be ready to get dirty and work outdoors in varied weather conditions

Vermicompost activities and requirements:

  • Cut or blend food to feed worm farms
  • Monitor temperature and moisture of 17 worm farms
  • Harvest worm castings
  • Prepare new bedding for worm farm harvested
  • Record all data properly
  • Be able to work in team
  • Some lifting required (worm farms can weight up to 25lbs)
  • Pest management
  • Cleaning work space and tools after

  • One large Good Food Box for every 10 hours of volunteer work accumulated
  • One 1.5L bag of worm castings for every 10 hours of volunteer work accumulated
  • Lunch (vegetarian and vegan options available) for every full shift worked

Volunteer candidate must be available to come for volunteer training session on Wed July 05 10am-12:30pm (compost) and/or Thurs July 06 1:30-4pm (Vermicompost) - (if you are applying for Thursday shifts, please consider coming to both training days, as we may have compost activities at the Thursday shift, but the training on July 06 will focus on Vermicomposting only). We expect candidates to be willing to volunteer for at least once a week, for minimal period of one month.
