Organization: Growing Chefs!
Location: Metro Vancouver and Victoria, BC
Growing Chefs! Chefs for Children’s Urban Agriculture is a Vancouver based charity that runs a Classroom Gardening and Cooking Program in elementary schools to get kids excited about growing, cooking, and eating good, healthy food. We believe in the importance of connecting young children to their food through hands-on learning, connecting them to nature, and teaching them how their food choices impact their personal health and the health of the environment.

In our classroom gardening and cooking program, volunteers are paired with a classroom in Grades 1-3 to give students hands-on gardening and cooking experience. And we need your help! Many of our volunteers are chefs, or individuals who work in the restaurant industry; the program was built around them sharing their experience preparing food but you do not have to be a chef to take part.
Because nutrition and growing food are also key components of our curriculum, we are always looking for volunteers with a nutritional background or growing and gardening experience to share their expertise.
Anyone is more than welcome to volunteer with us though, so if you are passionate about or interested in food literacy education, we’re looking for you!
This year as we are looking to recruit over 200 volunteers to reach over 1,500 kids. It’s a wonderful way for individuals to give back to the community and a great opportunity for them to share their incredible knowledge and passion about gardening. All skill levels welcome!
Volunteer commitment is minimal, it’s only 4 hours a month— 2 hours every 2 weeks.
Teams of three volunteers are paired with an elementary school classroom in Metro-Vancouver or Victoria, Gr. 1-3 where they follow detailed lesson plans from our Growing Chefs! Classroom Gardening and Cooking Curriculum.
The program starts the first week of April and ends late June, running in the mornings from 10.30am to 12pm.
You will join us for one of our volunteer trainings. Our first spring training is planned for February 12th (evening). More dates will follow!
Not only is it a minimal commitment, it’s also a ton of fun and a great opportunity to meet other members of the community!
See you soon!
