Positions: Permaculture homestead — food production work exchange

Location: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

Salt Spring Sprouts & Mushrooms/Feral Farm is seeking a self-motivated, engaged & enthusiastic, hard-working individual to join our 2020 team!

Located on 6 1/2 mostly forested acres, our permaculture homestead is entering its seventh year. Young apple, pear, plum, mulberry, peach, fig, hazel and cherry trees are entering into their initial productive stages. Our subsistence vegetable, herbaceous and bramble guilds require upkeep and we’re expanding and establishing a 20'x 60' greenhouse currently in its 2nd year of production.

We are offering a monthly monetary stipend, which also includes fresh fruits and vegetables from our gardens and local farms in exchange for three days per week (~20hr/week) supporting our successful, small-scale, home-based food business. Once or twice per month there will be an opportunity to work at a farmers market in Victoria for additional pay and experience (transportation provided). This can be a great opportunity to pick up items that one may not be able to find on the island or connect with off-island friends. We are also asking for 2 hours per week of land-based participation. Of course more time working with us on projects is welcomed and encouraged. We have small, but cozy, self-contained indoor accommodations available, composting toilet and an outdoor shower. Indoor showers are also available in the shoulder season.

Work days involve preparing our organic sprouts and mushrooms for farmers markets and wholesale clients on and off island. The work is indoors and is set in a relaxed, music-infused commercial kitchen environment. There are many opportunities for learning/participating in subsistence-scale food production and preservation, compost-building, community dynamics, garden bed making, efficient water usage, cover cropping, humanure, and soil building. Self-motivation, active engagement and a positive attitude are key. We do not offer a formalized learning curriculum, but rather an opportunity to practice/explore skills and interests related to a homesteading lifestyle in the beautiful Gulf Island region of South Western British Columbia.

Starting date can be as early as April 1st; season ends October 31. We are not seeking applicants for less than the full season.

There is potential to continue working into the winter months as a scaled down support staff for the off-season. This refined schedule leaves more room for another job or more time to explore the island and broader region while continuing to have a place to live and work on Salt Spring. Being here for a full year will provide greater insight into seasonal rhythms, and the systems that have been developed.
