ORGANIC FARMING

Opportunity: Organic Farm Land for Labour trade or Coop
Farm: New Leaf Organic Farm
Location: Perth, Ontario (on-farm accom., see below)

We are searching for experienced and motivated farm workers who just need a break to start their own farm and are willing to put the time and effort into what we hope may be a long term mutually beneficial arrangement.

We are beginning our third year as a vegetable Market Vendor at the Perth Farmers Market and our second year at the Ottawa Farmers Market in Landsdowne. We are growing the full range of Vegetables and some Fruit on 2.62 acres of Certified Organic Land. We also have another 6 acre field that we have had green manure cover crops on for the last 2 years. We would love to have this land used to grow food but we have pretty much reached our limit of what we can utilise ourselves. There are only so many hours in a day.

We are looking for people who have a desire and plans to develop their own agriculture business but are missing that key element of land. We will be open to a number of options that could work for everyone. A couple scenarios that could work are:

  1. For a set number of hours helping out on our section of the farm we would be willing to offer an one acre section of the next field down. You could start working on it this year or get it set up and ready to go for next year.
  2. Work as an apprentice on our farm for this year and have a set amount of land free of any charges for next season. This scenario would be similar to many other intern or apprentice farm jobs where a portion of the market sales would be offered as a salary.
  3. Rent, we would be willing to offer up to 2 acres of land to rent at a reasonable rate and with the understanding that a labour exchange could be arranged as the season progresses. Let’s face it many jobs on the farm are just so much easier with a couple people working together.

The land we are offering has had a clover and vetch cover crop on it for 2 years now. The cover crop was not cut or tilled in last year, it probably should have been. The soil is fair but could use a good compost addition and possible some dolomite lime. I do recommend getting a soil sample just to be sure the soil will fit your needs.

At present the main field is irrigated from our house well and last year that was sufficient for our needs. I do not know if we will be able to use the same well to irrigate the field we are offering. Especially if we have another drought year like last year. I am hoping maybe with some rent income next year, 2020, I may be able to have a well dug on the second field for its use.

In an the long term Ideal world it would be great if over the next couple years two to four small independent agriculture based endeavors were able to co-exist on the 50 acres we have available. Helping each other as needed but concentrating on our own goals.

Accommodations should be able to be worked out this year, but they might be rough. Long term we are discussing the possibility of having Bunk houses on site, or even Tiny Houses.

If you are interested in any of these options or would like to discuss alternative ventures please email me. A brief background of your farming experiences and knowledge and your aims would be appreciated. Contact: gordtennant60@gmail.com
