Want to experience every facet of an Organic Apple Orchard, live on a fantastic island, also experience off-farm events as the Salt Spring Apple Festival plus the Salt Spring Folk Club? An amazing learning opportunity for someone.
Apple Luscious Organic Orchard is one of the most amazing apple orchards in Canada. Certified Organic (IOPA # 902), we grow about 213 varieties of apples including about 40 varieties of Red Fleshed apples, which I call the apples of the future. These Red Flesh varieties are the largest collection in Canada. Everyone loves them including Chefs, since they are not only tasty, but also bake up pink. Work on this farm varies contstantly throughout the year, so never boring. In March, Harry grafts up about 900 apple trees, which get planted in his nursery and they are offered for sale the following March. Also you will get to experience every other facet of apple growing, including scion wood collection and sales (March), apple tree selling (March), planting apple trees (Jan to March), picking and selling apples (Sept to Nov). Plus we grow a large garden for our own use.
Harry is a very energetic and enthusiastic 70 year old ORGANIC apple farmer. He is commited to organic growing and organic eating, so the farm is a beautiful, peaceful 2.5 acres orchard where chickens roam freely throughout the orchard. His goal is to grow great tasting and healthy apples, based on a healthy soil. In addition, Harry runs the Salt Spring Island Apple Festival, now heading into it's 18th year. About 1500 people a year attend and become committed apple lovers when they see all 18 farms on the tour. Due to logistics, preference is given to males or couples. Salt Spring Island, itself, grows about 500 varieties of apples, ORGANICALLY. That is why we call Salt Spring Island, APPLE HEAVEN. Work at Apple Luscious Organic Orchard happen ALL YEAR LONG and jobs varies throughout the year, so never gets boring.
At Apple Luscious Organic Orchard, I raise our 330 fruit trees in a “wild” orchard. This involves minimal mowing, (mowing most of the orchard only once in the coldest part of the winter to minimize any damage to insects). Throughout the orchard, I tend to also leave clumps of vegetation untouched for chicken protection from eagles. During the year, I only use the mower to keep paths open during the year. Otherwise we keep bush back with a machete. So there is lots of wildlife habitat, especially blackberries, kept between the trees throughout the orchard. This becomes a great protection area for chickens. The vegetation is diverse and it supports in term a diverse population of insects. In addition, the seasonal cedar wetland bordering the east and south of the orchard is maintained in natural condition.
Our farm is very close to the ocean and Ruckle Park, a 1200 acres Provincial Park in the southeast corner of Salt Spring Island.
We have a beautiful border collie cross named HEIDI, who will love you forever.
