Botanical Medicine and Food Apprenticeship at Innisfree
Learn to follow the seasons and grow, harvest, process, and use your own food and medicine, from seed to finished product. Learn how to use herbs and foods to nourish and heal yourself, your community and the land. This apprenticeship provides an opportunity to learn by doing in field practicum as well as in more formal lessons.
2 sessions of 4 months each (16 weeks)
60 hours of tutorial time
Access to an extensive library
Study guides and opportunity for questions and discussion
Extensive Google Drive documents and learning resources
Fees: $1500.00 + GST
This program is focused on direct plant experience: some learning take place in nature where apprentices work hands-on with medicinal plants, on the farm and sometimes in the forest (there are close to 200 medicinal plants in the Botanical Garden and apprentices may work with several dozens during their stay.). The Innisfree apprenticeship is largely an experiential training, learning by doing, like working in the herbal dispensary making remedies for the clinic.
Location: 5km south of Courtenay, Vancouver Island, BC
Housing: In 2021 we have space for 8 people to live on site during the apprenticeship and have the opportunity to live and work on the farm, becoming part of a community of soil stewards and plant people. This requires an exchange of 25 hours of gardening per week for full board and lodging (private room in trailers or barn, all food, linens, laundry, wifi). You do not have to live on site to take part in this program. Individuals living in the community are welcome to attend.
