We are a truganic, biodynamic, permaculture farm in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, two hours Northwest of NYC. 24 acres with approx. 4 acres of wetlands. Approximately 5 acres under cultivation. We follow all the organic standards, and above (since organic standards are constantly being downgraded by the USDA), but are not certified organic. We DO NOT use pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, ""cides"" of any kind, or chemical fertilizers. We also follow biodynamic & permaculture principles.
Both full season and short-term welcomed. We prefer minimum 2-week stays. Season is May through October. We appreciate 5 hours of work per day, 6 days per week.
Visitors help with planting, transplanting, weeding, spreading hay and wood chip mulch, hauling, fertilizing, harvesting, making biodynamic preps, building and maintaining hugelkultures, clearing of brush, stacking of wood logs, rototilling, taking care of chickens, building fences, pathways, ponds, compost boxes, other building projects, etc.
We provide whole, unprocessed vegan food, however vegetarian options are available for those who want them. Opportunity to learn how to make fermented food and drinks, Kefir with original kefir grains, and gourmet raw food preparation with award-winning Master Chef. Prepare your own breakfast and lunch (we provide the food), and share what we prepare for dinner at 6 pm. We ask that 1 volunteer each evening help the chef for one hour with preparation of dinner.
No smoking, drinking or drugs.
We enjoy cultural exchanges with guests from other countries (as well as the U.S.). It enriches our understanding of other lands and people. We enjoy sharing our truganic, sustainable and permaculture farming endeavors, experience and knowledge. We are passionate about preserving Mother Nature in all her glory. Opportunities for outdoor recreation, hiking, canoeing, zip line, kayaking, swimming nearby, etc. There is a lake and hiking trails within walking distance. Also, Kadampa Buddhist Temple is nearby and they provide meditation sessions and on some evenings vegetarian dinners are available for $7. The site of the original historic Woodstock Music Festival is nearby in Bethel, and there is a permanent exhibit about the event at the Museum at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. People ask why was the festival held in Bethel instead of Woodstock? Good question. Venue for the festival had to be changed when the original site was opposed by the residents of the town in which it was to be held. As you can imagine there was a quick scramble to find another site.
To get here from NYC, take the Coach USA ShortLines Bus from the Port Authority to the Best Western Motel in Matamoras, PA. (The Port Authority Bus Terminal is located at 42nd St. and 8th Avenue in NYC). We can pick you up from the Best Western Motel.
The guidelines for living here are to be kind, friendly, and respectful to other volunteers. Keep the kitchen and other common areas clean after each use. Take turns washing the dinner dishes.
Accommodations for 3-4 people, 1 per room (3 rooms available) or up to 2 in attic (attic has an air conditioner). I usually put a couple, sisters, brothers or close friends in the attic where there is a bigger bed, plus a single bed. We also have 1 room with a full size bed for couples.
