Positions: Organic farm interns
Farm: Three Oaks Farm
Location: Mt Newton Valley, Victoria, BC

Our 1.5 acre certified organic farm is part of a 5 acre piece of land in the beautiful Mt Newton Valley, located 30 mins from Victoria and 5 mins from nearby commercial centres. We grow 40 different veggie crops and specialize in Spring and Fall veggie seedlings, salad greens, carrots, leeks, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, strawberries. We sell our produce through a marketing partnership (Saanich Organics) to several restaurants, a CSA box program and 3 vibrant farmer markets in Victoria. Interns have possibility for paid work at one of the markets.

Rachel has 25 yrs experience and is passionate about food security issues and ensuring the farm is financially as well as ecologically sustainable. Each intern/employee will have an area of responsibility and weekly discussions will involve you in planning and troubleshooting. Learn all aspects of market gardening and commercial production; seeding, bed prep, succession planting, irrigating, weeding, harvesting, packaging, record keeping, low till methods, selling, eating and enjoying. Your days will be full, diverse, and satisfying! We have 4 greenhouses as well as plenty of field crops. Rachel works closely with other farmers in Saanich Organics and will emphasize the business side of running a farm if interns indicate an interest. There will be opportunities to engage with the larger farm community of Saanich Organics.

Separate accommodation is cozy and comfortable, in a beautiful tiny house with a small but useful kitchen, sleeping loft, sitting area, shower and composting toilet. If that is full there is also a trailer available with bathroom/shower access at the house. We each cook our own meals and take lunch together on our deck. There is wireless access. We are located 1/2 hr drive from Victoria and 5 mins to local cafes etc. We are close to hiking trails and beaches, and have bikes to lend. We are a family of 4, with teens 13 and 18. Two other farmhands live on the property as well and there is a firepit for evening gatherings:)

Interns or volunteers will have full access to farm veggies all the time and other groceries paid for. A stipend of $500/mo ea is provided for interns staying the season.

For employees, tiny house is available as a rental or come from your own housing. Wage is $17/hr, including vac pay and full access to farm produce.

We are located near the ocean, the hiking trails of John Dean Park, and 10 mins drive from lakes for swimming. Ideal interns are physically fit, mentally stable, self motivated, eager to learn and willing to embrace all farm practices. Good communication is a must, as is use of common sense, the confidence to make decisions and a willingness to go above and beyond. Please make contact if you are positive, self-motivated, respectful of others, a hard worker and a non-smoker, or are considering organic agriculture in your future!
