Salt Spring Sprouts & Mushrooms/Feral Farm is seeking self-motivated, engaged, enthusiastic and hard-working individuals to join our team!
Located on 6 1/2 mostly forested acres, our permaculture homestead is in its seventh year. Young apple, pear, plum, mulberry, peach, fig, hazel and cherry trees are well into their productive stages. Our subsistence vegetable, herbaceous and bramble guilds require upkeep, we’re expanding our growing space and have an established 20'x 60' greenhouse in its 3rd year of production.
Various positions are available (full or part time with full or partial housing exchange) We have small, but cozy, self-contained indoor accommodations available as well as a larger studio space that could be appropriate for a couple or an individual seeking more space.
Work days involve preparing our organic sprouts and mushrooms for farmers markets and wholesale clients on and off island. The work is indoors and is set in a relaxed, music-infused commercial kitchen environment. There are many opportunities for learning/participating in subsistence-scale food production and preservation, compost-building, community dynamics, garden bed making, efficient water usage, cover cropping, humanure, and soil building.
Experience in food production is not required, however some familiarity with homesteading skills is a sought after asset. Self-motivation, active engagement and a positive attitude are key. We are specifically looking to collaborate with individuals who share a passion for subsistence gardening and who are seeking an opportunity to practice and explore skills and interests related to a homesteading lifestyle in the beautiful Gulf Island region of British Columbia.
Starting date can be as early as December 1st.
