Glen Valley Organic Farm is looking for folks with a love for organic fruit and vegetables to join our CSA crew!

Positions: CSA Produce Packer(s) and/or Driver
Farm: Glen Valley Organic Farm
Location: We are located in North-West Abbotsford, BC

Community Shared Agriculture or CSA is a program whereby farmers market their produce directly to consumers. The two farm businesses that live and farm on the Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-op property include Earth Apple Organic Farm and Close to Home Organics. They each grow and market their vegetables through the CSA program and work together to manage the administrative, packing and other logistics involved in operating the program - and we need help!

CSA Packer

May/June through November 2024

We are seeking new committed team members to join our small and highly productive organic farm to assist in the packing house– packing fruit and veggies for local communities. We care about the well-being of our CSA members, our workers and the land that we steward here at Glen Valley- join us!

This is a part-time position, which begins in May/June and extends through November 2024 and requires being on-site 2 to 3 days/week. Please let us know your availability according to this schedule and the hours you are seeking. The work days run every Tuesday through Thursday every week (perfect for long weekend getaways ;)

Packing House Responsibilities:

  • Be a part of a dynamic team of 6 people and farmers responsible for producing, packing and delivering 300-400 boxes per week with 9-11 fresh organic fruit and vegetable products for our CSA members
  • Follow an organized, assembly-line like fashion that keeps things moving (along with the background tunes) and prevents errors from occuring
  • Follow the guidance of your supervisors: the site-coordinator and the farmers
  • Manage the use of an awesome, high-tech rinse conveyor that efficiently washes rubbermaid totes and/or vegetables for packing preparation
  • Read & follow pack lists & set-up the packing area
  • Lift crates of produce upwards of 20-50 lbs each; know when to ask for help (two people/ heavy crate)!
  • Take good care of your body, ensuring good ergonomics
  • Moving produce around & around! From restocking the packing area, to moving packed totes to the truck or walk-in cooler, to weighing produce from boxes into bags
  • Comfortable using pallets and a pallet jack to do much of the work of moving product around
  • Able to provide your own transportation to/from the farm and track your labour hours in the timesheets provided on-site

  • Endurance & a positive attitude - we are on our feet for the whole day doing repetitive tasks
  • Enjoys working with others and also capable of keeping a steady work pace
  • Must adhere to food safety guidelines (training provided)
  • Ability to communicate with other team members in an effective & constructive manner
  • Values local, organic farm produce & serving our community with quality, healthy food

Compensation: We strive to ensure we meet living wage standards in Abbotsford, BC.

  • Position pays $20.66/hour plus vacation paid semi-monthly.

Delivery Driver

May through November 2024

We are seeking a dedicated driver to oversee the smooth delivery of our large, successful and growing CSA program: load/unload, drive a large delivery vehicle, work with the site-coordinator, administrator & farmers.

This is a part-time position, which begins in May at one day/wk (Thursday) and becomes 3 days/wk (Wed, Thurs, Fri) mid-June through November. We expect the driving to take approximately 20-24 hours every week on average, however flexibility is much appreciated as traffic is sometimes an obstacle in standardizing the delivery times.

Driver/ Delivery Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a large cube van style truck on the highway and in cities of the lower mainland
  • Load, deliver and unload up to 400 rubbermaid totes (each tote will weigh between 10 to 20 lbs) weekly to nearly 30 delivery drop off locations
  • Follow inventory at each drop off location and carefully review tote labels to ensure location delivery is correct
  • Report (with photograph) when each delivery location is completed & communicate problems should they arise to site-coordinator
  • Comfortable using a cell phone for navigation, texting, phoning (while not driving of course)
  • Plan travel schedules and routes, use maps and other trip planning aids, Perform pre-trip inspection of vehicle, record trip information such as vehicle mileage, fuel costs
  • Refuel truck at end of delivery week
  • Pick up and deliver empty rubbermaid totes at the end of each delivery & return the delivery vehicle to the farm site & unload empty totes onto pallet

Qualities and Skills we are seeking:

  • You have a valid BC Class 5 Driver License (No N / L) and a Clean drivers abstract
  • Must be available every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the 24 weeks beginning May 10th through to December 1st (see below for detailed description of dates)
  • Experienced or capable of driving a large cube van with a 16’ to 18’ box and a knowledge of the lower mainland
  • Strong organizational skills and efficient time management
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and be comfortable with repetitive work, use a dolly and possibly lift gate
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Comfortable under pressure (in traffic and with delivery time constraints)
  • Positive attitude, good communication skills in front of members, & ability to work well with the team
  • Previous Courier or delivery driver experience with Skip the Dishes, Save on Foods, UPS, FedEx, etc. is an asset.

Compensation: We strive to ensure we meet or supersede living wage standards in Abbotsford, BC.

  • Position pays $22/hour plus vacation paid semi-monthly.
