Position: AgroEcology Technician
Type: summer job / age 30 & under
Organization: The Boreal Centre for Sustainability
Location: BC Moberly Lake (north-east BC) and remote office access as per mutually agreed workplan

As an AgroEcology Technician, your tasks and responsibilities will be to complete work assignments through a division of on-site and limited remote access in collaboration with other program personnel:

  • Provide hands-on support (constructing, installing) for various research and demonstration projects in small scale (solar, wind, ground heat storage) in small scale renewable energy (solar, irrigation & food security through greenhouse, garden, composting, orchard & berry production projects
  • Serve as a technical resource person to help with BCS partner projects with similar agroecological initiatives
  • Support development of online (video, webinar) resources for demonstrating green household living & property stewardship
  • Shared work to update the online Peace River South "Eco-Enterprise Directory" to enable increased market access
  • Develop virtual resource materials and delivering presentations to community and interest groups
  • Investigate member and community support and training needs for "eco-enterprise" development with a focus on renewable agro-ecological applications
  • Provide assistance with administrative office & organizational support functions

The selected candidate will be expected to:

Be enrolled in a co-op or applied research program at a recognized post-secondary institution in a program related to the position; preferably a relevant applied technology program related to applied technology (College, or University)

  • conduct safe operation with physical ability to use all field equipment for onsite activities (garden implements, brush cutters, shared-use post hole gas powered auger, rototiller, lawn tractor, quad 4x4
  • have access to their own reliable vehicle for work use with remuneration for approved expenses
  • be willing to accept on-site basic RV or shared accommodation for work fare exchange (1 day per week) and/or low rental rate.

The student will be supervised by the Project Manager, in the following manner:

  • weekly or bi-weekly job supervision of assigned tasks by agreed workplan
  • preparation of a personal career development plan
  • weekly review of relevant professional training resources
  • limited support for independent study (online or directed research)
  • attendance at virtual workshops, and relevant training opportunities subject to available funding
  • mid−term and completion of employment review

Preference: will be given to candidates who have

  • demonstrated skills and experience on the job or farm light construction, basic electrical, mechanical and/or millwright work
  • technical background and/or demonstrated interest for self-directed learning in renewable energy (solar installations, wind-mill and solar water pump assembly, irrigation systems) related to small-scale agricultural production
  • preferably enrolled in studies within the Peace River region of northern BC or Alberta or other postsecondary technical program in BC.
  • familiarity with WEB-site development/updating in WordPress program

Hours: total coop duration qualification (12-14 weeks duration, or 30-35 hrs/week)
Location: Moberly Lake (north-east BC) and remote office access as per mutually agreed workplan
Earliest Start Date (On-Site): May 24th - latest started date June 7th
Wage: $18-22/hr (incl benefits) subject to experience and career interests
Internet: Broad-band WiFi available and included for work and accommodation
Eligibility: Candidates must be no older than 30 years of age and preferably (but not necessarily) returning to full-time studies in fall 2021
