Position: Community Garden Technician
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Project: Urban Farm Initiative
Locations: Markham, Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, GTA, Ontario

The Urban Farm Initiative has been operating for approximately 8 years with results to prove our dedication and ability. Our organization focuses on transforming underutilized lands into community garden spaces to address food insecurity and promote environmental sustainability. Currently, we have three sites, one each in Markham, Toronto, and Richmond Hill. Each garden has been in operation for a different number of years, but all have been successfully installed and are running productively by our organization, delivering fresh produce to local food banks and welcoming many volunteers and visitors to our sites. As we have been reliably running these gardens, our organization will continue to do so in the years ahead.

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Garden work: weeding, watering, harvesting, etc.
2. Garden installation: planting, garden bed installation
3. Interact with occasional visitors and event attendees
4. Assist with occasional events on the weekends

Qualifications:

1. Be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
2. Be able to lift 50 lbs
3. Access to a vehicle is recommended, but not necessary
4. Need to be able to work independently and in a team
5. Basic computer proficiency, such as using Excel
6. Interest in gardening, food security, sustainability, or community building is an asset.
7. Ability to interact with visitors, clients, and staff in a courteous and professional manner.

Start Dates:

• Unionville, Markham: start date: May 26th
• Rexlington, Etobicoke: June 16
• Richmond Hill, York Region: June 16th
