Heavenly Roots Farm is seeking two dynamic individuals to fill the positions of Farm Apprentice for the 2021 season.
Full time (35-40 hrs/week)
May 1st - October 31st
Stipend is $600/month, with $50/week gas stipend if you drive your own car to work.
We supply a bonus at the successful completion of the apprenticeship, commensurate with the season's sales.
Heavenly Roots Farm is a market garden supplying fresh fruits and vegetables to a CSA program, two weekly markets and via wholesale to small retail stores on Salt Spring Island, BC. We are members of the BC EcoSeed Co-operative, a collaborative of farmers and seed growers. Together, we grow and market seeds through an online catalogue to farmers and gardeners in our region.
We lease land at two sites: At the Burgoyne Valley Community Farm we grow the majority of our annual vegetable crops. We have a small apple orchard and produce raspberries, blueberries, tayberries and blackberries at Haywire Farm on Dukes rd.
Our goal is to participate in a local food system that values community, ecology and health. With this in mind, we grow without the use of pesticides or herbicides, use a no till/low till production system and seek to increase access to locally grown, regionally adapted seeds. We enrich our soils with organically certified amendments, compost, manure, mulches and yearly cover-cropping.
The Ideal Candidate
We need apprentices who love plants and are obsessed with food and farming!
Apprentices will assist us with all of the daily activities of our farm business. Tasks include:
Seeding, seedling care, managing micro-greens, bed preparation, applying compost, transplanting crops, cultivating and weeding, operating the seeder and transplanter, irrigating crops, installing trellis & row cover, moving tarps, pruning and trellising crops, harvesting, picking fruit, wash & pack, setting up the farmer's market, attending CSA pick-ups, maintaining clean spaces, and interacting with customers.
Apprentices may also take on extra tasks according to their skills and interest.
Apprentices will be instructed in a hands-on manner with supervision from one of the farmers until their proficiency allows them to work independently.
We will complete a few sessions sitting down around the table to discuss planning details like crop rotation, determining seeding dates, seed ordering, and business topics related to the apprentice's interest.
We invite apprentices to come prepared with their own learning outcomes for the season, and we will help them to fulfill their goals with mentorship, instruction, and hands-on opportunities.
Apprentices have full access to our small library of farming books, ebooks, and an online farming course.
Our community is brimming with experienced growers who have similar or different focuses to ourselves. We can provide connections to our community and love to share tours and social meetings with other farmers and apprentices in our community. Seeing other farms is a great way to imbibe a diversity of approaches to farming and gardening.
Living on Salt Spring Island
A room in our family home is provided and apprentices will share kitchen and washroom space with the farmers and their two roommates. This is a communal living situation where the upkeep of the house is shared. All household members are expected to clean up after themselves, participate in regular chores, and be respectful in communal spaces.
Apprentices are provided with fruits and vegetables from the farm and regular kitchen staples (ie. milk, bread, rice, eggs, pasta, beans etc.) Shared meals and cooking for one another is encouraged though not necessary, and the farm team will rotate cooking duties for lunch during the work days. We have had a communal potluck dinner every Wednesday and invite our apprentices to participate in this fun tradition.
We can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free lifestyles and are happy to be considerate of food allergies in our shared meals. We are however a household of gluten, dairy and meat eating people, so applicants should be aware these items will be in use in the kitchen.
