About Ben Blooms:
Ben started his farming journey in 2013, interning at a veggie farm in rural Nova Scotia. This experience sparked his interest agriculture, and decided after finishing his degree in environmental biology he would continue to pursue farming. This led him to a farm on Salt Spring Island which was a mixed veggie and flower farm. Here he fell in love with growing flowers. It mixes the physical rewards of veggie farming with the creativity of floral arrangment and design. Following this experience, one more farming internship led him to Prince Edward County, where he decided to settle. In 2019 Ben's Blooms was born on rented land in the county. After 2 years of business on rented land, it was evident that in order to expand the business as hoped, purchasing a farm would be necessary. In December 2020 the perfect location was found just outside Milford and we are busy this winter getting the farm ready to launch our first season here!
The farm is located on 16 acres with views of South Bay, Lake Ontario. Five acres is a functioning hay field while the other 10 acres have historically been used for veggie production and livestock. This season, we are planning to grow 1/2-1acre of flowers and 1/8-1/2acre of veggies. Since this is the first year growing on the farm, fertility, climate and water availability are not fully known, so in addition to growing on farm, we have also rented 1/2acre to grow higher value crops.
Ben's Blooms focuses largely on farm style mixed cut flower bouquets. We sell these at the Wellington farmers market, the farm stand and several retail outlets in the county. We grow a wide selection of cut flowers from A to Z-innia. This year we are turning focus to everlasting flowers as we have found dried bouquets to be very lucrative. This year we are also going to open a U-pick flower operation on the farm.
About The Internship:
As an intern, you will get to experience every step in Ben's Blooms operation. This will include seeding, bed prep, translplanting, weeding, fertiliizing, harvesting, weeding, arranging, packaging, selling, oh! and did I mention weeding? The intern will be working on average 8am-5pm Tuesday - Saturday. There is a 1hr lunch and 30 minute coffee break everyday. THIS IS HARD WORK. We will be working rain or shine, 5degrees or 35degree. You will be hot, sweaty, sore and tired. BUT this is very rewarding work. after the sweat and tears have dried, you will be left with a sense of accomplishment, mental and physical strength and of course a beautful product!
The intern will recieve a private bedroom in the 1890's farm house, food for the season and a monthly stipend (averaging $500/month). The house is shared by the intern, Ben, Ben's sister Jane and her wife Emily.
