Hiring: Cafe Shift Lead
Employer: Social Gardener CafeRiverdale Hub
Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, Toronto, Ontario

The Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s East End that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Gallery, co-working and event spaces, and a rooftop garden. The Social Gardener Café is focused on providing our customers with healthy & affordable vegan meals whether they are just stopping in for a coffee or planning a large catered event. Position Summary:

The Shift Lead not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, food security and community.

The Shift Lead supports the Cafe manager in managing the operations of the cafe, retail space, catering, and campaigns/events. The position reports to the Cafe Manager and will assist with the supervision of cafe associates and participants enrolled in the Food Service & Hospitality Program at the Hub.

Key Roles/Responsibilities:


  • Support Cafe Manager in the hiring, supervising, training, and scheduling of employees.
  • Provide mentorship and training to Food Service & Hospitality Training program participants in food handling and preparation.


  • Assist Cafe Manager in the preparation of monthly financial reports.
  • Manage cash, petty cash, and tip disbursement with Cafe Manager.
  • Conduct inventory control and place food and supply orders.
  • Track and analyze food waste.

Food & Retail Service:

  • Perform barista and food preparation coverage in the cafe as needed.
  • Assist Cafe Manager with preparing catering items for events.
  • Liaise with Cafe Manager on retail product planning, preparation, and merchandising.

Campaigns & Promotions:

  • Prepare social media postings, newsletter blurbs, and website content for cafe.


  • Ensure all Hub policies, Toronto Public Health regulations, and COVID-19 safety and disinfecting standards and procedures are followed.
  • Ensure equipment is in working order and arrange for repairs and maintenance as necessary.
  • Ensure maintenance of cafe, retail space, community kitchen, and patios.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 2+ years of food service & hospitality experience with 1+ years of supervision experience.
  • Graduate from a Food and Hospitality training program is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique social enterprise model.
  • Barista and baking experience is a must.
  • Recipe and product development experience.
  • Knowledge of food preservation.
  • Valid Food Handler’s certificate is required.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS.
  • Marketing & communications skills/experience.
  • Preliminary graphic design skills are an asset (Canva, Photoshop etc.).
  • Familiarity with Touch Bistro POS, social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Google Business), and food delivery apps (Ritual One, Door Dash, Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats).
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, move product, equipment and supplies (e.g., patio furniture, etc.).
  • Flexibility to work various shifts as needed.
  • Availability to work weekends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, G-Suite).

Hours: 35 hours/week

Salary: $20/hour; health benefits after 4 month probationary period
