Job Overview:

Scope of the Position:

The Food Services Manager is responsible for the management and efficient day-to-day operations of Camp Kawartha’s kitchen for our Outdoor Education, Facility Rentals and Summer Camp Programs. Duties include menu development and preparation of meals (in keeping with our Health Food Philosophy), maintenance of a safe sanitary workplace, budgeting and inventory control, ordering & storage of products, managing and scheduling staff, and satisfying the nutritional needs of campers, students, staff, teachers and visiting groups.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing and adhering to an annual site budget.
  • Ensures food service facilities meet all Camp Kawartha, Public Health Department, Ontario Camps Association, Health and Safety, and Ministry of Labour Standards.
  • Ensures food delivery is of the highest standard (appealing, varied, sustainable, healthy, local and nutritious) and meets Camp Kawartha’s mission of fostering environmental awareness and stewardship.
  • Participates in the recruitment & hiring of kitchen employees, conduct staff orientation & training, schedule staff hours, identify training needs, and effectively leads and supervises kitchen staff. Monitors kitchen staff performance, conducts employee performance reviews.
  • Liaisons with and maintain positive communication and relationships with Executive Director, Summer Camp Director and other department managers.
  • Plans menus and food utilization based on anticipated number of guests, nutritional value, palatability, sustainability, popularity, and costs. Ensures menus follow Canada's Food Guide and are in keeping with our environmental ethic.
  • Ensures the kitchen operates in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner from ordering local food, to avoiding processed foods and excessive packaging.
  • Monitors food preparation methods, portion sizes, garnishing and presentation of food in order to ensure that food is prepared and presented in an appealing manner.
  • Ensures that adequate food supplies have been ordered, maintain a complete and thorough inventory. Establishes and ensure maintenance of food rotations in storage / inventory in order to minimize spoilage and waste and maximize food quality & guarantee food safety.
  • Checks in with campers, students and visitors on a regular basis to monitor food quality. Interacts positively with all clients. Assists rental groups with their menu planning.



  • Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
  • Specialized training in foodservice management and nutrition is an asset
  • Certificate from a recognized culinary program is an asset


  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience preparing quality, sustainable, nutritious and appealing food for children and adults.
  • Minimum 1-2 years in a related management, supervisory or leadership position
  • Experience in providing buffet-style meals for large groups (up to 200 people) such as summer camp, tree-planting camps or school cafeterias, experience in small scale service industry, and experience catering large scale events including weddings
  • Knowledge of all legislated health & safety standards and regulations that govern the handling, delivery, storage and preparation of food including those required by the Public Health Department and Ontario Camps Association
  • Familiarity in large scale, computerized ordering systems.
  • Must have knowledge of and experience accommodating food allergies and special dietary restrictions (e.g. nut allergy, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, halal, etc.).
  • Ability to prepare staff schedules, maintain food inventories and work within an approved budget
  • Strong computer skills. Ability to maintain records and complete reports as required

Credentials (certificates, licenses, courses, etc.)

  • Must have clear Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector check to work near children
  • Safe Food Handler Certification (must be updated yearly)
  • Standard First Aid & CPR
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate

Work Conditions & Physical Capabilities

    • Able to work long hours (8 to 12 hour shifts), conditions may be hot during in summer months
    • Fast-paced environment, work under pressure, tight deadlines, repetitive tasks
    • Physically demanding, manual dexterity, standing for extended periods, bending, crouching, kneeling, lifting
