Hiring: Market Gardening & Apprentices
Org.: Richmond River Roots Market Garden

Location: River Bourgeois, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
On-site living: Newly renovated, staff accommodations available if needed (private bedroom; shared bathroom, common room and kitchen) overlooking the stunning Atlantic ocean. 

Richmond River Roots Market Garden Society is a social enterprise that grows great food, plants food knowledge and harvests community connections. 

River Roots has three seasonal full-time market gardener positions in River Bourgeois, Cape Breton.

  • Experienced Gardener (1 position) – May 1st – October 31st 
  • Apprentice Gardeners (2 positions) – May 1st or July 3rd – August 25th

The Richmond River Market Garden sits on approximately three acres of land. The cultivated plots are scattered throughout the River Roots property. Community members participate in food workshops, lunches, teas and other activities in our on-site commercial kitchen and café. 

River Roots practices: 

  • growing food using organic, eco-friendly methods of cultivation throughout the planting and harvesting seasons
  • year-round planting with a high tunnel and climate battery greenhouse

Members of the River Roots Team will: 

  • plant, weed, water, grow, and harvest our fruits and vegetables 
  • learn about selling, preserving, cooking and storing produce

We are seeking team players who: 

  • Enjoy outdoor employment
  • Can work flexible hours (gardens don’t take the weekend off) 
  • Have some gardening experience
  • Possess the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Can work within a team environment - that bears repeating 

Responsibilities of all market gardeners

  • Participate in all aspects of the garden project (ground prep to harvesting, selling and storage) 
  • Participate in the accomplishment of the project objectives 
  • Assist with Farmer’s Markets 
  • Conduct garden tours 
  • Assist with education endeavours of the project 
  • Help to maintain equipment 
  • Help to ensure grounds are presentable 
  • Assist with day-to-day care and maintenance of the gardens and greenhouses
  • Undertake minor repairs as determined by Project Manager 
  • Assist with the general maintenance and repairs needed for the gardens, greenhouse and buildings 
  • Comply with agreed codes, legislation, policies and procedures including health and safety
  • Maintain accurate records/documentation associated with work 
  • Meet targets and contribute to those of the team as a whole 
  • Identify hazards, defects and the need for repair 
  • Responsibly use resources and control expenses to operate within budgetary controls

On-site living: Newly renovated, on-site staff accommodations are available if needed (private bedroom; shared bathroom, common room and kitchen) overlooking the stunning Atlantic ocean. 

Market Gardener: 37.5 hrs/ wk; flexible hours; $20.00/hr

Market Gardener Apprentices: 37.5 hrs/wk: flexible hours; $16.00/hr
