Position: Researcher and Community Facilitator
Organization: Sustainable Brant/Better Brant
Eligibility: Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee, 30 years or younger
Term: Immediate until March 31/26, full-time

Location: between Brantford and Ancaster, Ontario
Housing: option of on-site accommodation

Do you have training in land use planning and protecting natural areas, water and farmland?

Have you done any archival research, or worked for a museum?

Have you any experience in forming a charity or working with a land trust?

Are you interested in helping our organization to protect farmland and natural areas in Brant County?

Have you done any event planning or facilitated workshops?

We research and promote:

  • the protection of farmland, natural heritage, and water, within the County of Brant and Brantford, and
  • inclusive, transparent governance on all levels of government.

We are in the process of

  • becoming a charity and establishing a museum

We work with

  • partners such as Ontario Farmland Trust, Langford Conservancy, National Farmers Union-Ontario, Six Nations, Canadian Environmental Law Association, Ecological Farmers of Ontario, Ontario Land Trust Association, rural environmental planners, and
  • community members, providing outreach (website, newsletter, workshops, forums).

Job Description:

You would be involved in helping with the following:

Researching, teaching, and promoting:

  • Responsible growth and the prevention of sprawl within the County of Brant and Brantford
  • protection of farmland, natural heritage, built heritage and water,
  • conservation practices for farmers and landowners

Helping our sister organization (Langford Conservancy)

  • to acquire charity status, and
  • to gain museum status (helping to assemble historical archives)

Fostering

  • Inclusive, transparent governance at the municipal, provincial and federal level
  • An inclusive rural community through outreach to migrant farm workers, food rescue and redistribution.

The work will involve:

  • Research and writing,
  • consultations: helping residents participate in policy making to protect farmland, water and natural areas,
  • facilitating workshops and events related to sustainability, conservation, land use planning
  • Assisting in strengthening our board governance
  • providing outreach to members of the rural community (newsletter, workshops, forums, social media).

We are seeking someone who is highly motivated, and who cares about the protection of farmland, natural and built heritage, and natural areas and water in Brant County. We will provide mentoring and work with you.

Application Details:

  • must be between 18 & 30 years old and legally allowed to work in Canada (a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have been granted refugee status),

  • Term: 17 weeks until March 31, 2026
  • Start Date: as soon as possible
  • Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.
  • Pay: $25/hour, 40 hours/week
  • Benefits: organic fruit & vegetables, discount on herbal products, 4% vacation pay
  • Schedule: 7-hour day shift, Monday to Friday, occasional evening, or weekend
  • Assets: experience researching and writing, land use planning courses, museum studies, knowledge of land use issues in Brant, WordPress, Canva, Mailchimp, event promotion, experience with community organizing and outreach to farmers, landowners and the public, driver’s license, Spanish, Palestinian Arabic
  • Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
