Position: Creamery Apprentice
Company: Upper Bench Estate Winery & Creamery
Location: Penticton, BC

Upper Bench is situated in Penticton, British Columbia in the South Okanagan at the gateway to the famous Naramata Bench. Working with Upper Bench’s cheesemakers, the apprentice will have the opportunity to learn the craft of cheesemaking and the art of affinage. This is a food production position, regulated by the CFIA and maintaining SFFCR.

Qualifications

• The ability to take follow all policies and procedures for sanitary cheese making practices
• Strong attention to detail and excellent personal hygiene
• Cooking/kitchen experience is helpful (measuring/weights)
• Be able to work independently and efficiently
• Excellent math, verbal and written communication skills
• A positive attitude
• Must be able to repeatedly lift up very heavy items (up to 80 lbs)
• Have reliable transportation to and from work & must be punctual
• Food safe certification

Duties:

• Long periods of standing, walking, lifting and various repetitive motions
• Cleaning and sanitizing all cheesemaking equipment, tools and cheese caves.
• Cheese affinage (care of cheese, flipping, washing, salting)
• Assisting the cheesemakers with any other duties as required
• Be able to work with chemicals & work in small spaces
• Be comfortable working all day in a very warm and moist environment (up to 30C and 100% humidity)
• Cheesemaking, wrapping, cutting, labeling and pricing cheese
• Weekends and evening work occasionally required
