The Working Centre Market Garden
We are currently in the midst of our 10th season at The Working Centre Market Garden! We garden on about an acre and a half of property, supplying 165 CSA members with our fresh produce. Vegetables are the core of our work, but the property is also home to annual cut-flower and perennial pollinator patches, a multitude of fruit trees, fruiting shrubs, and perennial crops. The space is farmed intensively using organic practices at a human scale (i.e. most of the work is done by hand), which is enabled by our role as a community space for skill-building and connection.
What should I expect in this role?
This is an opportunity to join a team of gardeners that includes 2 full-time staff, 3 interns, and a number of volunteer gardeners. Planting, weeding, and harvesting - these tasks occupy our day-to-day and serve as a means to learn and connect with each-other and the land through common work. The project is funded primarily though our CSA program, which provides over 165 households with a share of the harvest. Abundant produce is shared with members of the garden community and distributed through other community partners.
We are looking for a self-starter who is eager to join our community and work with us to carve out a role that builds the garden's capacity to grow food in community. This role is intended to support both the practical and relational pieces of our work. As such, it will be an opportunity to build-on and use leadership, entrepreneurial, and organizational skills. For more information about skill-building at the garden, read about our Garden Internships.
Experience: Previous experience in gardening, greenhouse work, farming, or growing food in some capacity is an asset. We are hoping to find someone who feels comfortable jumping into the work of growing and harvesting relatively quickly. Some level of comfort with customer service is also helpful, in order to support the delivery of our CSA Program.
We understand that access to ecological farm work is not equitable and we are looking to build a diverse team! If you identify as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour, OR if you face other accessibility barriers to traditional farming opportunities, he highly encourage you to apply.
