Location: anywhere in Ontario
Hours: approx. 3 days / week to be discussed

Summary and Background

The Fair Finance Fund seeks an excellent candidate for the Social Finance Associate, a contract for 2021-2022 (12-month contract) with possibility of extension).

The Fair Finance Fund welcomes applications from equity-seeking groups and people from historically marginalized communities.

Project summary:

The mission of the Fair Finance Fund is: to mobilize equitable and accessible capital for Ontario's food and farm enterprises that create social, environmental and economic benefits.

The Fair Finance Fund (“Fund”) is a non-profit social finance fund dedicated to providing loans and mentorship services to local food and farm enterprises that value strong local food systems, local economies, and a healthy planet.

The Social Finance Associate will support the development of digital and other marketing materials, training and online toolkits to promote the climate resilience and environmental benefits of the sustainable food system that the Fair Finance Fund supports. The focus is to promote, track and celebrate the environmental benefits, actions and solutions provided by the sustainable, organic or ecological farms, food producers, processors and independent markets supported by the Fair Finance Fund. The marketing campaign is part of the Fair Finance Fund’s work to support local food and farm enterprises as they pivoted to respond as essential services during COVID and to provide safe distribution of healthy food to meet the needs of people and the planet alike.

The Social Finance Associate is part of the team implementing the Fair Finance Fund, which includes the Marketing and Communications Coordinator in the direct team, and two Regional Coordinators, the Project Manager, and the Board. The position is supervised by the Project Manager with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator. As part of a small team, the contractor will participate in all aspects of the Fund, including social finance lending and investment programs.

Skills development

The Social Finance Associate will work closely with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator and Project Manager to develop expertise in the environmental benefits of sustainable food and farming enterprises, and in conducting demographic and sociological analysis to create targeted online marketing. The Associate will be able to access training in software platform development for robust training modules paired with the Fair Finance Fund web developer, and branding for social enterprises in the sector to promote environmental benefits of regional sustainable food systems. As gaps or additional skills training needs appear, other opportunities will be identified to increase the Associate’s toolbox of skills.

Project Purpose and Description

The Fair Finance Fund tracks metrics with all loan clients that include social and environmental impacts. The power of the sustainable food system to meet demands for environmental resilience, climate change mitigation and resilience has not been sufficiently recognized and celebrated in Ontario or Canada. The project builds on secondary research and the material gathered in semi-annual reporting from clients to promote the contribution of the sector to environmental issues from soil and water health to biodiversity on diverse farms to reduced emissions from appropriate scale equipment and reduced food miles from regional food distribution and import replacement. The materials will celebrate the work of the sector through stories from the Fund’s clients, build more knowledge and expertise to promote the opportunity to meet Canada’s environmental goals through this sector, and provide marketing templates, virtual training and online toolkits for clients to promote their environmental benefits and resilience to their own customers, suppliers, partners and communities.

The Fund is an incorporated non-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors, with a Loan Review Committee, management by the partners and Fair Finance Fund staff (including northern Ontario staff and partners), and a pool of advisors to support loan recipients to achieve success in their social enterprise.
