ORGANIC FARMING

Position: Organic farming
Farm: Fair Fields

Location: Neustadt, north of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario
Housing: on-farm housing t.b.d. (see below)

Hourly Wage $15/hr. (plus picking bonus for strawberry picking).

About the farm: Fair Fields is near Neustadt, in beautiful Grey County, Ontario. We run a small-scale fruit and vegetable operation specializing in u-pick, retail and wholesale of asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries and sweet corn, with another crop to be trialled this year for fall production. This should be our first year certified organic and we are trying to incorporate some no and low-till methods into our production. We have a small staff that will include 2 part-time full season employees, 2 part-time strawberry pickers (during the season) and hopefully you!

Duration and Schedule: This position starts in early May and runs through August. It will average 40 hrs./week, with slightly shorter weeks in the beginning and end, and slightly longer weeks during strawberry season. Depending on farm income over the season, there is an opportunity to work into September/October.

Vacation and time-off: One work week of vacation (5 days) will be provided during the season (unpaid). It can be taken all at once or as individual days, anytime, with the exception of the 3 weeks of peak strawberry production. At this time, we are unable to offer paid sick days.

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred; and,
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be physically fit and able to occasionally lift 50 lbs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plant, weed, fertilize, mulch, irrigate and harvest asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries and sweet corn
  • Seed and maintain corn transplants in greenhouse
  • Help with construction projects, including a walk-in cooler and ongoing barn renovations
  • Maintain and mow under deer/racoon fencing
  • Secure and move silage tarps and landscape fabric
  • Supervise strawberry u-pick
  • Make hay and straw
  • Plant and maintain cover crops
  • Contribute to content and post material to social media and our website
  • Supervise volunteer labour and work independently and as part of a team.
