JOB POSTING / INTERNSHIP

Position: Farm Hand Internship
Farms: Happy Hills Farm + Flourish MicroFarm
Location: RosslandWest Kootenay region BC
Type: paid position / 32-40 hours per week

We are first generation farmers located in the beautiful mountain town of Rossland, British Columbia.

We own and operate both an outdoor veggie market garden (2 acres and growing!) and a certified organic indoor microfarm where we produce microgreens year round.

We are excited to offer a PAID internship that will see the successful candidate work, train and learn at both of our farms!

This position can start immediately. Unfortunately we cannot offer accommodation, so if the successful candidate is relocating, time to search and secure accommodation will be required. We can offer internship employment until the end of October 2022.

The beginning of the internship will take place inside at our microfarm, learning and helping to grow microgreens November through until the end of March. Our intern will learn everything there is to know about growing microgreens and running a successful and growing microgreens business.

In April we move outdoors to the veggie farm, and our intern will learn every aspect of vegetable growing at a scale that feeds our community and beyond. The intern will be responsible for starting seeds and maintaining starts, preparing and building garden beds, planting in the field, bed maintenance throughout the season, fertilization and amendment strategies and application, composting, harvesting, processing and packaging produce, and putting the gardens to bed for winter. We have two coldframe greenhouses and a nursery on site, so our intern will learn coldframe growing techniques and strategies as well as nursery management skills. Our intern will learn much about irrigation and water conservation strategies. Our farm implemented our Environmental Farm Plan in 2021, so our intern will learn about how we grow food while prioritizing our environment, and will likely have the opportunity to take part in one or two EFP projects we implement next year.

The successful applicant will:

  • have experience growing food and/or microgreens, or at the very least, have a very strong passion for learning about food production with hopes of starting their own farm someday
  • thrive on hard work. Farming is not easy. Its a physically demanding job. We work in all weather conditions. We work long hours. We get dirty and wet. We are outside working in sometimes extreme heat, sometimes smokey skies, sometimes very cold and wet conditions. Our intern will embrace all working conditions and be able to power through the day with a smile.
  • be very eager to learn. We have much to teach and we are looking for someone who is open-minded and ready to focus, understand and learn all about how to grow food.
  • have experience with basic garden tools and techniques
  • be reliable and punctual. Being in the field, ready to work at the specified time is pertinent. Committing to this job, such that it is your priority, and therefore call in sick rarely, is essential.
  • be able to work efficiently once the task is understood. We work on tight timelines, and often a job needs to be completed quickly. We need an intern who is strong, able-bodied and willing to work hard throughout the entire shift.

The successful applicant will be a very positive person who finds joy and happiness outside or in the garden. We consider ourselves very lucky to have the privilige to grow food - we celebrate the work we do and the food we produce - and we are eager to find an intern who feels the same.

This internship is a paid position. The wage we offer will depend on the experience of the successful applicant. We are fully prepared and happy to pay a good wage for the right experienced person. We hope to find someone who has food production / farming experience, but we are definitely willing to train the right person who can commit to this position until the end of October 2022. The position will be 32-40 hours per week.
