Position: Organic farming
Farm: Good Clean Farm

Housing: There is no housing on the farm, but rental housing is available in Truro and the surrounding area (5-10 minute drive/15-20 minute biking distance from most parts of Truro)

Schedule: 40 hrs per week, approximately 8 am to 4pm with a paid 30 minute lunch break. Schedule may vary seasonally and based on weather and farm work demands!

We are looking for someone who is interested in learning about organic vegetable production through working hands-on in all aspects of the operation of a small-scale, no-till market garden!

About Good Clean farm and this position:

Good Clean Farm, est. 2015, is a small-scale (under 1 acre), no-till farm located in Salmon River, Nova Scotia, just outside Truro. We are certified organic (Ecocert) as of 2021 and believe in sustainable, low-impact agriculture. We specialize in growing high quality, tasty and clean table-ready produce. We grow a wide variety of produce both outdoors (carrots! onions! kale!) and in greenhouses (tomatoes! peppers! eggplant!), and make several types of ferments using our own and other locally-grown produce. We are a four-season farm, attending the Truro Farmers Market year-round. During the main season, we offer a CSA program (produce box subscription) as well as attending the market with a full range of produce. In the winter we attend the market with ferments, storage crops, and fresh greens which we produce throughout the winter in our greenhouses.

Our farm is run primarily by Brendan. The team also including his partner Angharad part-time, occasional volunteers, and one full-time seasonal worker. This job posting is for that one full-time seasonal worker! That means you would be working primarily in a team of 2 alongside Brendan, with the company of additional workers anywhere between 2-4 days a week. Because we are such a small crew, the full-time farm worker is involved in all aspects of the farm's operation. Regular tasks include bed prep for planting, seeding crops, starting transplants, weeding by hand and with tools, maintenance of crops, harvesting and post harvest prep for the market and CSA. You will at times be working closely alongside Brendan and other team members (particularly for training), but there will also be a significant amount of solitary work as the season progresses and you learn the ropes. Your work will remain varied throughout the season, but your level of responsiblity for certain tasks will grow as you find your interests and strengths.

What we are looking for:

We are looking first and foremost for someone interested in learning about all aspects of operating an organic, no-till market garden. Farming is hard and detail-oriented work, and a strong interest in organic food and it's production is essential to enjoying and doing well at this job!

Qualities we are looking for:

  • Clear and honest communication
  • Good attention to detail
  • Willingness to take direction and critical feedback in the interest of improving efficiency and quality of work
  • Internally motivated and able to work efficiently and happily without supervision
  • Ability and willingness to work under difficult physical conditions (strenuous work in all weather)

Experience we are looking for:

  • No prior farm experience is required, but it is an asset
  • Experience working in fast-paced, production environments or in physically demanding jobs is an asset

Questions? Call Brendan at 902 305 4312 or email info@goodcleanfarm.com

The position is for a farm worker from April 1st until Nov 2st 2024. You must be available to work 5 days a week throughout the contract, with one week of unpaid vacation. You are responsible for securing your own housing and transport to and from the farm (5-10 minute drive/15-20 minute biking distance from most parts of Truro).

We look forward to hearing from you!
