Positions: Organic Urban Farm Fieldhand

Location: Locke St N neighbourhood, Hamilton, Ontario

Backyard Harvest is an urban farm in the Locke St N neighbourhood. We use organic and biodynamic methods to grow vegetables for local consumption.

We are seeking two full time field workers for May-October 2024, generally 8-5 Monday-Friday. We are also seeking someone to join our team just for the summer months. You will be involved in all aspects of growing healthy vegetables including transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing and delivering vegetables.

Applicants should be physically fit (able to lift 40 lbs, squat, kneel, bend, etc.) and be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. We use bicycles regularly in urban farming so ability to ride a bike is required. Previous farming or plant work experience is highly preferred however if you are keen to learn vegetable farming and feel you are a good fit please apply.

Other requirements:

  • Work well as a team member and independently
  • Have dependable transportation to get to work on time
  • Be able to commit to staying for the duration of the position
  • Have strong attention to detail and be able to complete repetitive tasks
  • Provide your own comfortable and effective work gear for all seasons and weather
  • Be a kind, interesting human being – Bonus points if you love vegetables!

Other considerations:

People of any age should apply, however we will give some preference to people who meet the requirements for a grant that helps us pay wages. The requirement for the United Nations Youth Breaking Barriers to Employment grant include being between the ages of 15-30, willingness to do some extra online training, and doing this work not as a practicum for any program.

If you would like to learn these skills but are not up to full time we do welcome volunteers!
