ORGANIC & REGENERATIVE FARMING

Position: Goat Dairy Barn Manager, Milker and Farm Labourer
Farm: 1876 Heritage Farm Inc. (formerly Green Valley Farms)

Location: Dalston, (10 minutes north of Barrie), Ontario
Housing: on site accom. (see below)

Type: Full time
Starting: Immediately
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience plus accommodation

The Farm: We are a fourth generation diversified farm (pasture raised Black Angus cattle, Saanen dairy goat herd, and much more). The farm is transitioning to organic and we plan to grow the goat dairy herd to 160 dairy does with the objective to produce artisanal cheese on site. We provide accommodation on site (a private room in a shared century farmhouse, utilities, internet, laundry), farm store discounts.

Position Summary:

  • Husbandry and daily care for the goats (feeding, bedding, water, kid care and management, and milking on a 2 times daily basis)
  • In consultation with farm manager/owner, development and oversight of herd management and milk production plans
  • Training and supervision of dairy barn relief personnel/milkers
  • Ensuring proper sanitization and operation of milking equipment
  • General oversight over health and well-being of the goats, including promoting best management practices, ethical animal treatment
  • General oversight of the barn maintenance including repairs, manure removal and bedding, etc.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of good record keeping for both husbandry purposes (e.g. breeding, kidding and vaccination events, health concerns, etc.) as well as milk production.
  • Weekly reports

Skills/Attributes:

  • Milking experience with goats or cows an asset.
  • Farm work experience an asset.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors under varying weather conditions
  • Able to follow direction well and work efficiently and independently
  • Be a team player
  • Honest, hard-working and reliable
  • Enthusiastic, can-do attitude and be adaptable
  • Desire to live and work on a farm and expect that farm life is hard yet rewarding work you will love.
  • A commitment and passion for farming and regenerative agriculture.
  • If you don’t have goat experience, a willingness to learn what is required for both good husbandry and care as well accepted sanitary practices for milk intended for human consumption.
