Position: Farm-To-Table Kitchen Cook & Delivery Driver
Type: Full Time Position (30-40 hrs per week) $22 per hour
Company/Farm: The Conscious Kitchen 
Markdale, near Owen Sound, Ontario
Start: late April, 2021

About The Conscious Kitchen:

The Conscious Kitchen is a farm-to-table prepared meal and grocery delivery service that helps people eat in alignment with their values in the Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, and surrounding area. That means local & seasonal ingredients, plant-based, and zero-waste packaging. We will also be adding a ¼ acre vegetable & herb farm this year, growing produce for the meals we prepare. We are a small business, with weekly dedicated customers, and have many relationships with local farms & food businesses. We operate on our farm near the West Grey area, a 1.5 hour drive to Guelph and KW. We are located 15-25 minutes from the small towns of Durham, Markdale, and Flesherton.

The Opportunity:

This a multifaceted position involving kitchen & farm work, as well as delivering our weekly orders. We are looking for someone who has a strong interest in local & organic food, ethical sourcing, and diverse flavours & cuisines. You will work directly with the owners, and have a high level of responsibility. You will mainly work independently, and must have a high attention to detail & strong work ethic. Our work environment is fast-paced, but we foster creativity, fun, & value our team member’s input & suggestions. A decent knowledge of seasonal & vegetarian/vegan cooking is required, either from a personal or commercial environment. You will also need to be a very confident rural driver, and be comfortable driving our large van on rural, winter roads.This is a full-time position, with working days being Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and ½ days- full day on Wednesday. We are seeking someone who can stay with us long-term & grow with the business.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Kitchen Work (15-20 hrs per week):

  • Prepping/chopping significant amounts of fresh vegetables
  • Preparing base ingredients such as rice, legumes, sauces, and marinades
  • Plating & packing finished dishes
  • Washing & sanitizing tools, equipment, and reusable containers
  • Unloading shipments of ingredients (lifting up to 50 lbs frequently)
  • General cleaning & upkeep of kitchen

Farm Work (0-5 hrs per week):

  • General farm work such as planting, seeding, watering, weeding, harvesting
  • Washing vegetables after harvest
  • Moving materials such as compost, soil, corp covers, bins, etc.
  • Taking photographs of the farm

Delivery Driving (15-20 hrs per week):

  • Driving orders to customers in Guelph, KW, Cambridge, and Collingwood using our refrigerated cargo van
  • Driving routes that span up to 8 hours in one shift
  • Driving in all weather conditions, such as snow & rain (Not in extreme conditions)
  • Keeping the van extremely organized & ensuring customers get their correct orders
  • Picking up supplies & ingredients from local suppliers

Critical Skills:

  • Detail oriented & independent
  • Strong work ethic and ability to handle responsibility
  • Confidence & experience driving in rural winters & various road conditions
  • At least 3 years driving experience & a fairly clean driving record
  • Cooking knowledge & interest with seasonal/plant-based ingredients
  • Food prep skills such as fast chopping, careful detail in washing/cleaning vegetables
  • Enjoy working outside in various weather conditions
  • Creativity, friendly spirit, and positive attitude!

Ideally the candidate will already be living in the Grey-County Area. We are communtible to Durham, Markdale, Owen Sound, Collingwood, etc. If you plan on relocating, you must have experience living/working in a rural location. We are two queer women (one of whom is POC) in our mid-twenties, so you must be queer friendly and intersectional (anti-racist, etc.). Queer, BIPOC, and/or womxn are especially encouraged to apply.

The pay is $22 an hour. The position will involve yearly raises, and ideally become a salaried position within a few years. There is an opportunity to take over aspects of the business in the future, or develop products of your own.
