Position: Produce Manager

About Us

Market Greens is a program managed locally by Greater Fredericton Social Innovation (GFSI) to promote health and prevent diet-related illnesses, by making fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible and affordable for people living on a low income.

There are two key streams to the program: creation of a non-profit market that provides access to fresh, affordable food once a week, as well as, providing nutritional education; and a Greens Prescription project, offering food coupons to targeted people who are more vulnerable to chronic and diet-related illnesses. The overarching goal of this two-year pilot is to research and test approaches for improving access to fresh foods at the community-level in order to measure and eventually scale-up an investment in subsidized fresh food.

The Position

The Produce Manager is responsible for organizing key aspects of the mid-week market, from ordering produce, managing volunteers, coordinating nutritional education, and overseeing the sales process. As well, the Produce Manager will ensure the smooth administration of the Greens Prescription project, ensuring that candidates referred from community partners are enrolled and survey rounds completed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing the purchase of produce and specialty items from wholesalers and growers, including selecting the items, determining order quantities, and issuing purchase orders
  • Managing the sales and payment process including both online and in store transactions supported by Square technology
  • Managing customer relations and administering the customer database
  • Recruiting and supporting Market Day Volunteers
  • Coordinating and promoting food literacy to enhance the educational component of the market experience, delivered with the support of community partners and incorporating website, videos and social media platforms
  • Preparing and conducting surveys to monitor customer service and preferences
  • Interviewing candidates for the Greens Prescription program to qualify them for inclusion, tracking their participation, and ensuring survey data is delivered to program administrators
  • Connecting with other pilot operations to share learning and providing feedback to program funders
  • Creating and implementing ideas that enhance the market experience and achieve the project vision
  • Ensuring adherence to all health and safety regulations

Experience and Skills

  • Experience as a Farmers’ Market Manager or assistant an asset
  • Connections with the local non-profit community and/or farm/food vendors an asset
  • Experience managing staff and volunteers in a service or retail operation
  • Experience coordinating events including planning logistics, delegating tasks and communicating with stakeholders
  • Food Safety Certification an asset
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to be responsive, flexible to complete tasks at hand, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a community setting with diverse populations
  • Ability to create and maintain good working relationships
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace (GSuite)
  • Physical endurance with the ability to lift loads of up to 25 lbs is required

Working Conditions

This part time, 16 month term position is estimated to require 20-25 hours of time commitment per week. Hours worked are flexible and may vary, with the exception of a commitment to be present to manage the market each Wednesday. The market is open to the public from 2pm – 6pm and time is required for set up and tear down.
