Position: Regenerative Farm Hand and Natural Cemetery Assistant

The Farm Hand and Natural Cemetery Assistant will fulfill a variety of chores and tasks on the land, such as, caring for livestock, haying, fencing, minor building and plumbing repairs, cemetery grounds maintenance and landscaping.

Night Owl Farm is a bio-diverse regenerative farm raising cattle and chickens primarily; also growing fruit, berries, hay and vegetables. Salt Spring Island Natural Cemetery is Canada’s first entirely green burial cemetery open to the public.

Weekly tasks will include:

  • Feeding animals
  • Collecting eggs
  • Picking up grain locally and off-island
  • Bedding animal pens
  • Fixing and building fences
  • Weed-whacking and mowing
  • Cutting and splitting wood (using a chainsaw and ax)
  • Driving farm machinery (pick up truck, tractor, skid steer, small excavator, small dump truck)
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Planting trees, bushes and ground cover
  • Trail building
  • Minor repairs to buildings (using power saws, drills, hand tools)
  • Minor plumbing repairs

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution in the fields of any of: science, technology, engineering, arts, math or business (this position is partially funded by Eco Canada so registration with them is necessary).
  • Canadian Citizenship
  • Valid Drivers Licence
  • Able to comfortably lift 40 lbs
  • Good attitude and communication
  • 3 work references

Assets:

  • Agriculture and/or horticulture experience
  • Livestock experience
  • Ability to drive farm equipment
  • Experience with power tools
  • Carpentry skills

There is the opportunity for research in your field of study. We can discuss proposals.

The position is 32 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, with extra hours required during haying season.

Wage: $20/hour
Start date: April 19, 2021 or sooner or later as available with school.
