RETAIL MANAGER JOBS

Position: Assistant General Manager
Organization: Karma Co-op
Location: near Bathurst Station, Toronto ON (can be done partly remote 2 times a week if necessary)

Purpose: to assist the General Manager (GM) in the management and administration of Karma Co-op, and to meet the goals and objectives established by the General Manager and the Board of Directors.
Reports to: General Manager
Supervises: Retail Associates (union).
Supervision: The Assistant General Manager is supervised by the General Manager, and receives an annual evaluation and a semi-annual review of progress.

The Assistant General Manager supports the GM by doing the following:

Human Resources

  • Participates in the hiring, training, managing, and evaluation of staff
  • Orients and trains new staff, and provides ongoing training and supervision to all unionized staff
  • Oversees payroll data and other weekly income and expenses to the bookkeeper
  • Creates staff schedule and manages time-off and staff vacation requests
  • Takes disciplinary action following established policies and procedures
  • Promotes health and safety practices and standards
  • Promotes friendly and respectful relations between staff and members
  • Records staff time-off (vacation, sick time, unpaid, personal days)
  • Is familiar and conversant with the collective agreement
  • Follows all terms of the collective agreement in a professional manner
  • Communicates regularly with staff and provides updates on management and board decisions

Purchasing and Merchandising

  • Oversees vendor relations, staff purchasing of products, and the management of inventory
  • Works with the Floor Supervisor and the Communications Coordinator to merchandise products, promote items on sale, and ensure inventory turnover

Operations and Maintenance

  • Maintains and oversees security of building, equipment, inventory, staff and members
  • Maintains the cash on hand, settles issues in cash reports, and makes bank deposits and picks up cash as required
  • Covers work shifts left vacant by staff

Customer Service and Membership Engagement

  • Ensures prompt, friendly, knowledgeable customer service on the part of all staff
  • Works with GM, board and committees to assess and increase member satisfaction
  • Keeps current on co-operative philosophy, natural food products and business trends in the natural foods and co-operative industries
  • Coordinates with Member Labor Secretary to sort out any issues with member hours, payments of fees and discrepancies
  • Signs up members that apply by email
  • Answers Questions/Comments from members and others through email and directed from the website

Planning and Goal Setting

  • Participates in goal setting for committees
  • Participates in short and long term planning with Board of Directors and GM

Meetings

  • Attends all staff meetings, and shares leadership of team meetings with the GM
  • Shares committee meetings’ attendance with the GM
  • Attends Board of Directors’ meetings should the GM be unavailable.
  • Attends management meetings, as necessary

Salary Range

  • The salary range for the Assistant General Manager is $42,000-48,000, based on training, education, and grocery retail experience.
