Position: School Garden Grower Educators
Organization: Growing Young Farmers Society
Location: Victoria, Sidney, & Langford, BC
Growing Young Farmers Society (GYFS) is a non-profit that builds and staffs school gardens in and around Victoria BC. Our program emphasizes the importance of local, organic, sustainable food sources and teaches children and youth how to grow healthy produce - encouraging them to share their knowledge with their families and community.
We are currently looking for Grower Educators for the 2021-2022 School Year. We are looking for someone who loves to work with kids, has a passion and a knowledge of gardening, and who can commit to teaching during the fall school year that runs Late September- Early December. Following this time, the job can continue in the spring running from March-June. The job pays $20 an hour and is perfect for someone who is available to work once or twice a week, on contract. This is also a great opportunity for the applicant to see what our organization is about- with potential for more opportunities through our summer camps, other school gardens, and as a member of the GYFS Board.
We have partnered with Nature Canada and Work to Grow in order to diversify and strengthen the nature sector. As such, please indicate if you are an individual who identifies as Black, Indigenous, and/or Person of Colour on your job application. Non-BIPOC candidates are also welcome to apply.
We are currently hiring for the following School Programs
1) Happy Valley Elementary School (Langford, near Luxton Fairgrounds)
2) Doncaster Elementary (Victoria, near UVic Campus)
3) Lochside Elementary (Victoria, near Mt Doug)
4) Crystal View Elementary (Langford, near Thetis lake)
5) Keating Elementary (Central Saanich)
6) Deep Cove Elementary (Sidney)
This work is very independent. Most Grower Educators spend 1 day per week teaching 5-6 classes outside with the support of the classroom teacher (~7 hrs/day). Educators also work closely with a "Champion Teacher" who helps to gather supplies for the garden, fundraise, and communicate with the school and parents about the program.
Upon hire, applicants will be invited to attend a group training session -with fellow Grower Educators where they will be given example lesson plans and specific training on how to teach at, and run a school garden program.
Please submit your application to firstname.lastname@example.org before Friday September 17th with the following information;
