Hiring: Camp Counselors (days)
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Employer: Neighbourhood Farm Schools | Summer Day Camp
Location: Salt Spring Island, Gulf Islands, BC

Dates: June 26 - August 7
Hours: 40 hours per week (M-F), $21 per hour

Camp Counselors will facilitate Neighbourhood Farm Schools camp programming for kids ages 6-10 at Bullock Lake Farm on Salt Spring Island. Our camp programming includes farm chores, educational and art activities, games, songs, harvesting, cooking, sharing food, and farm exploration. Camp Counselors will work as part of a small team to lead activities and develop programming that they’re excited about.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work as a team and individually to facilitate camp activities with campers ranging from 6-10
  • Plan engaging curriculum and daily activities for campers to go with the camp theme each week
  • Manage the camp group safely and with inclusivity, kindness, patience and positive discipline
  • Work as a team to create an organized and positive camp atmosphere, including activity prep and clean-up
  • Interact with campers, families and volunteers in an enthusiastic and friendly manner
  • Maintain clear and open communication with Bullock Lake Farm staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrate positive leadership for campers and fellow staff
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment for youth and adults

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with kids is preferred but not required - most important is that you’re outgoing, positive, energetic, and playful
  • Strong interest in farm, outdoor, and/or environmental education
  • Education and/or experience in teaching, gardening, cooking, arts, theater, or related fields preferred
  • Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions for up to 9 hours a day
  • Able to follow policies and procedures to ensure camper and staff health and safety
  • Must pass a criminal record check to be able to work with children and vulnerable populations
  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Requirements
    • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at start of employment
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person with refugee status
  • Current First Aid, including Child and Infant CPR, not required but an asset

Working as a camp counselor is an immersive and rewarding experience - as a camp staff you’ll be creating magic for our campers, teaching them the value of joyful play and purposeful work, and sparking their curiosity and wonder.

Farm camp staff receive training, including in depth training on camp programming, activity planning, health and safety, and diversity and inclusion. The first week of the contract is devoted to training and camp prep, followed by four camp sessions and a final week of cleanup and review.
