Position: FOOD SECURITY PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organization that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for over 30 years.

The Society runs demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz, BC. We have an exciting opportunity at our Delta location for an articulate and energetic individual who is passionate about addressing food security issues and wants to make a real difference in our community. Reporting to the Food Security Program Coordinator, the Food Security Program Assistant will be responsible for the following: 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Food Production

• Participate in food production activities at Earthwise’s Demonstration Food Garden and Teaching Farm
• Harvest, process and prepare produce for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes and Harvest Box Program
• Maintain cleanliness of food handling and storage areas
• Assist with Don’t Mow Grow urban farming program including plot maintenance, planting and harvesting

Delta Food Coalition (DFC)

• Assist with the implementation DFC’s community food security programs, including:

• FoodMesh (surplus food rescue initiative)
• Shared Harvest (fruit gleaning)
• Harvest Boxes (weekly produce boxes donated to community members)
• Victory Gardens (supportive gardening program, part of the Harvest Box program)
• Contribute to the development and design of food security resources, including weekly newsletters
• Attend and take minutes at monthly DFC meetings
• Assist with the supervision and training of volunteers
• Participate in training opportunities, educational programs and team meetings
• Assist with sourcing and organizing food donations from local charities, farms, and community members; pick up and deliver donations as needed

Qualifications:

• Be currently a full-time student who will be returning to college or university in the Fall
• Be enrolled in a program related to environmental studies, food security or horticulture.
• Be self-motivated, flexible, willing to take initiative, work well independently and in a team environment
• Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
• Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident (Service Canada requirement)

Note: This is a full-time position of 35-hours per week for 8 weeks with the possibility of extension. Wage is $15.65/Hour. Weekend work will be required
