A rare, inspiring opportunity for a passionate Educator to co-manage a farm-based micro-school following Forest School principles.

Position: Farm-Based Micro-School Educator
Organization: Fronterra Farm
Location: Prince Edward County, Ontario

Fronterra is a 58 acre waterfront organic farm located in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada (1.5 hours east of Toronto) producing vegetables, cut flowers, botanicals, hops, barley and wheat. During the summer tourist season, Fronterra offers luxury camping and agro-tourism experiences that connect guests to the natural world while transferring related skills that have a positive impact on the environment. Fronterra’s vision is to foster a shift toward healthy, sustainable lifestyles and promote the understanding of our connection to the diversity of the natural systems that sustain us (see

In 2017, Fronterra launched “The Guild” as a farm-based early-childhood education program focusing on natural, outdoor experiences for a class of 5 children. The educational elements of Fronterra’s vision were designed to inspire children with a wonder of nature through outdoor-based experiences to deliver an ecological literacy that connect them to simplicity, self-sufficiency and sustainability while building a strong moral purpose for the future, kindness to others, and a starting awareness of the challenges of our future. This is achieved through:

  • Nature-based experiences: farming, permaculture, eco-gardening, wildlife study & food production
  • Simplicity: Slow Movement, yoga, meditation, small is great ~ less is more
  • Self-Sufficiency: confidence, courage, diverse & practical skill sets, competency, self dependance
  • Sustainability: closed-loop consumption, community support, ecological advocacy
  • Moral Purpose Development: confidently define good-vs-bad, right-vs-wrong in a modern context
  • Understanding Challenges of our Future: Racism, sexism, climate change, globalism, rich-poor gap, food/energy/health security.

In Sept 2020 we officially launched an expansion of this initiative in the form of a ‘pandemic pod’ consisting of a 6 child cohort lead by an OCT certified primary/junior educator with outdoor education accreditations. Although we had intentions to build an alternative school onsite in the future to better achieve our vision as a company and a family, the pandemic has fast-tracked these plans to the immediate.

Based on passionately positive feed-back from families already enrolled in the program and robust interest expressed by the community, we are now expanding again to fully establish this educational endeavour into registered alternative micro-school based on Forest Learning principles where the Ontario Curriculum, guidelines, standards and evaluation approaches act as a base-line to grow from.

In preparation of the Autumn 2021 school year, we are now seeking an accredited and passionate professional with a hardy entrepreneurial spirit to lead the more similarly aged cohort of 4-5 years old (Kindergarten) while the existing Educator leads the 6-7 year olds (Grades 1-2). While both programs are separate and independent, there are periods of overlap such as lunches and breaks that can provide support and community as the program develops.

To ensure the success of this Autumn 2021 expansion, there will be a soft launch of the new arrangement this coming summer in the form of a day summer camp for the two cohorts with the confirmation of the new position based on performance in August for the Fall/Winter 2021-22 school year.

We are looking for an accredited, inspired and energetic candidate to co-lead this mentioned summer camp with the other educator(s). The main responsibilities are of this position are to:

  • Develop, implement and lead a mainly outdoor program for ~6-8 children aged ~4-6 from 9AM-3:30PM;
  • Encourage and inspire children in their discovery of the natural world while inspiring curiosity, confidence and compassion;
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the children at all times;
  • Communicate with parents regularly regarding the program;
  • Perform administrative work and plan for future developments;
  • Provide breaks for the other educator.

The candidate will ideally have the following qualifications. Please note that if you have a true passion for child education and thrive in an ever-evolving creative, natural environment but do not have all these qualifications, we encourage you to apply:

  • Bachelor of Education degree (elementary), or Ontario College of Teachers Qualification (OCT)
  • Knowledge of alternative schooling approaches such as Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Montessori and/or Green School (Bali, New Zealand)
  • Current First Aid with CPR-C (or able to complete prior to start date)
  • Clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
  • Experience working with children and experience working in an outdoor setting
  • Enthusiasm for the outdoors and capable of performing teaching duties regardless of the weather
  • Fluency in French is a strong asset
  • Leadership and entrepreneurship skills, capable of thinking creatively and solving problems
  • Strong desire for farm-based living, close to nature in a community of like-minded individuals

Salary & Conditions

$22-30/hour starting, full-time depending on experience, qualifications 8:30AM-4:00PM Monday-Friday for 2 month summer programming period with potential for a full-time salaried position in September commensurate with Ontario profession standards.

Starting Date

June 2021

As the pandemic continues to affect the primary schooling system and children’s quality of education, Fronterra is responding by expanding its farm & forest school programming into a full-fledged alternative micro-school for local families wishing to limit contact while still offering their children a premium educational experience. Following this growth plan, there is an opportunity for 3 further expansions to conclude programming at the grade 8 Ontario equivalency in 2026 and positions may change based on performance. Fronterra could also formalize a summer camp based on Forest School principles for Summer 2022 to be based in the farm’s gardens, fields and forests making this opportunity year round.
