Position: Administrative & Program Director (APD)
Organization: Sole Food Farms
Location: Vancouver, BC. Flexible/hybrid work environment - requires on site activity with safe workplace policies and a covid screening program and work from home opportunities

Organizational Background

Sole Food Street Farms is an internationally recognized social enterprise that transforms vacant urban land into street farms. Our mission is to empower individuals with limited resources by providing jobs, agricultural training and inclusion in a supportive community of farmers and food lovers.

Sole Food Street Farms is wholly owned by Cultivate Canada, which oversees its operations and activities. Cultivate Canada is a registered charity established to demonstrate and interpret the vital connections between farming, land stewardship, and community well-being; to model the economic and social possibilities for small and medium scale urban and rural agricultural and forestry projects, to address disparities in access to healthy food and the knowledge to produce it, and to nurture the human spirit through public programs, classes, and events. The Sole Food Urban Farm Training Project is conducted by Cultivate Canada through a service agreement with Sole Food Farms.

Position Description

The APD reports to the executive director (ED) and board of directors in the overall strategic and day to day management of staff, programs, funding, and execution of Sole Food Street Farms, the Sole Food Farms Urban Farm Training Project, and Cultivate Canada’s mission. Day to day farm operations is managed by the Director of Farm Operations (DFO).

The APD should have solid organizational skills with experience in small business, non-profit, or social enterprise management including budget management. Candidates should have excellent communications skills, be capable of multi-tasking and have a strong aptitude for problem-solving. Experience working with multi-barriered individuals, such as in a supportive housing, harm reduction, or addiction support environment is highly desirable for this position.

Sole Food Farm is a dynamic community project providing support and employment to individual facing multiple barriers, the successful candidate for this role will have a strong interest in community building, social justice, community economic development, poverty alleviation, with outstanding communication and technical skills related to financial managment, governance, and program management.


Project Management/governance (20%)

  • Planning, execution, and completion of the annual Sole Food Farm Urban Farm Training Project.
  • Board administration/meeting documentation

General administrative duties (30%)

  • Conducting the day-to-day administrative activities for Vancouver’s largest urban farm and registered charity, Cultivate Canada.
  • Prepare and oversee bookkeeping and year end activities for Cultivate Canada and Sole Food Farms.
  • Cash management, banking
  • Budget preparation and management
  • Payroll administration

Programs & Events (20%)

  • Event Planning
  • Plan and coordinate farm tours
  • Develop and conduct strategies to promote book and retail sales using multiple outlets including online.
  • Other programs and events as needed to carry out Urban Farm Training Project.
  • Coordinate staff engagement events, workshops, outreach opportunities.
  • Coordinate public tours and events

Human Resources (10%)

  • Coordinate human resources for 3-5 support staff and 20-25 mission-based farm workers.

Fundraising (20%)

  • Manage online donor database
  • Assist with annual appeal letters, grant applications, and other fundraising projects.
  • Seek out new funding opportunities
  • Grant reporting
  • Donor acknowledgement and relations
  • Assist ED and fundraising coordinator in soliciting charitable donations


  • Demonstrated commitment to working with communities and individuals experiencing complex barriers.
  • Experience administering charity, corporate, or non-profit governance is highly valued for this position.
  • Patience, compassion, and a good sense of humour
  • Skills with business systems and software such as
    • Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Suite, Dropbox, CRM
    • Bookkeeping fundamentals (i.e., QuickBooks)
    • Payroll
    • Social Media
    • Online forms (i.e., JotForm)

Staff supervision

The Administrative and Program Director reports to the Cultivate Canada board of directors and the Executive Director and collaborates with the Director of Farm Operations to manage project and business operations for Sole Food Farms and Cultivate Canada. The APD provides program and budgetary oversight and takes ownership over budget planning and management.
