Position: Volunteer Coordinator
Organization: Withrow Park Farmers Market
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Eligibility: 30 or younger (see below)

A part-time fixed-term contract, running 22 weeks: May 23 to October 23, 2021, inclusive

Compensation: $16.50 an hour

Hours: 15 hours per week - with 7 of those hours spent working on Saturdays at the farmers’ market (June 5-October 16) and the rest spread over two to four days during the week working from home. (Subject to funding from Canada Summer Jobs)

The Withrow Park Farmers’ Market in Riverdale is an upbeat outdoor farmers’ market that is growing neighbourly connections, community vitality and a local sustainable economy. The market is open every Saturday 9am to 1pm, rain or shine, from June 5 to October 16, 2021.

We’re looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to manage our volunteer program, who will work closely with our Market Manager.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Manage the volunteer program: recruit, schedule and support volunteers every week, ensuring key volunteer tasks are always covered
  • Be the first point of contact for new and returning volunteers
  • Oversee that the entrance of the farmers’ market is running smoothly
  • Act as an ambassador at the market
  • Assist the Market Manager and volunteer team efficiently set-up and tear down the market
  • Supervise any market activities that are being conducted by the volunteer team
  • Manage all administration and communication related to the volunteer program
  • Provide additional support to the Market Manager as requested; logistical support, promoting the farmers market, preparations for special activities, anniversary celebrations, maintaining market equipment
  • Ensure the volunteer team and market operations are following all public health protocols and guidelines


  • Must be available to work every Saturday, 7am to 2pm from June 5 to October 16 inclusive
  • Administratively self-sufficient: a mobile phone with your own plan; and access to a computer and internet for home working
  • Physical ability to lift boxes, put up tents and pull loaded carts

Experiences and skills

  • Experience managing volunteers or projects
  • Experience successfully completing tasks in a time-crunched environment
  • Experience using Google suite of products, including Google docs and spreadsheets
  • Experience developing task lists
  • Experience with client-facing work
  • Great people management skills (good at delegating tasks, helping people feel valued, energizing groups and managing conflict)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills


  • Enthusiastic, outgoing
  • Flexible/adaptable -- since things don’t always go to plan on market day
  • Interested in local food issues, farmers' markets or environmental issues
  • Work well in a team with people from different backgrounds and with diverse personalities
  • Ability to adapt to fast-changing situations, learn new things, and take on new challenges
  • Ability to creatively and thoughtfully solve problems in a diplomatic and fair fashion
  • A task-oriented, organized, detailed person
  • Dependable and punctual with good time management

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
