About The Mississauga Food Bank
The Mississauga Food Bank’s (TMFB) vision is a Mississauga where no one goes hungry. We work to relieve hunger in Mississauga by providing and promoting access to healthy and appropriate food. Additionally, we encourage our network to engage in the democratic process and we engage in poverty reduction advocacy so that people no longer require a food bank.
The Advocacy Allies are a group of volunteers put in place to expand the capacity of TMFB’s advocacy initiatives. While TMFB does not currently have staff resources dedicated solely to advocacy, this team of volunteers with passion for and knowledge in the political sector will enable TMFB to achieve more in its advocacy work and make each initiative more effective and impactful.
The Co-Chair position will serve as a volunteer leader of this group. The Executive Business Assistant will Chair the group; 1-2 volunteer Co-Chairs will work closely with the Executive Business Assistant to support and ensure the success of the group’s members. The Executive Business Assistant will connect the Co-Chair(s) with the status of advocacy initiatives that TMFB is undertaking, and the Co-Chair(s) will work alongside the Executive Business Assistant to develop and execute a plan to activate the Advocacy Allies in supporting those initiatives.
TMFB’s advocacy strategy is outlined below:
The Advocacy Allies group will meet quarterly and additionally will be called to action as needed to support TMFB advocacy initiatives. While volunteering in person at said initiatives is not mandatory, members of the team will be the first ones tapped for and entrusted with these opportunities. Such volunteer opportunities may include, but are not limited to:
In quarterly meetings, team members will have the opportunity to learn about upcoming TMFB advocacy initiatives, priorities, and events, as well as provide input on how to optimize initiatives and discuss ideas for future initiatives.
In addition to the above responsibilities expected of all team members, Co-Chair(s) will meet as needed with the Chair to prepare for group meetings, and responsibilities associated with running group meetings will be divided among the Chair and Co-Chair(s).
Co-Chair(s) will report to the Executive Business Assistant (Chair). Committee members will report to the Chair and Co-Chairs. Coordination and communications will in select instances be managed by the Volunteer Coordinator.
Meetings will take place virtually. Various volunteer opportunities will take place either virtually, at The Mississauga Food Bank (3121 Universal Drive), or at any number of TMFB’s neighbourhood food banks & other network agencies across Mississauga.
Duration & Time Commitment
Two-hour team meetings quarterly. 1-hour Chair & Co-Chair meetings as needed to prepare for quarterly meetings. You may commit to advocacy-related volunteer opportunities according to your availability; this may be anywhere between 5-40 hours per year in addition to the quarterly meetings.
Minimum one-year commitment.
Training on the democratic process, political issues and proposed solutions, volunteering instructions, etc. will be provided as needed for each volunteer opportunity that arises.
