Positions: Permaculture homestead — food production work exchange
Type: full season Nov 1st– April 31 with opportunity to extend, live on-site, hourly wage, more (see below)
Homestead: Salt Spring Sprouts and Mushrooms
Location: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
Salt Spring Sprouts/Feral Farm is seeking a self-motivated, engaged & enthusiastic, hard-working individual (or couple) to join our team!
Based on a 6 acre permaculture homestead on Salt Spring Island, this is an opportunity to learn a great deal about homesteading, subsitance gardening, composting, irrigation systems, food preservation, etc. and to live within the context of beautiful, lush, abundant gardens with a delightful group of young people who all share a passion for fresh food, nature and skill sharing. This position in our sprout business allows you to earn a modest living with indoor accomodation as part of the exchange, while being based on a beautiful destination island, with lakes, hiking trails and a vibrant, artisic social scene. From November until April, we require a commitment of 16-20 hours per week and 1-2 market shifts per month.
We have two indoor spaces avaible. One is a 33ft fifth wheel and the other is a 900 sq ft studio space. The fifth wheel has a self contained kitchen, bedroom and living room, running water an outdoor compost toilet, oil heater and a covered roof/small porch. It is clean and dry and is ideal for one person but can also accomodate a couple quite comfortably. The studio is a larger space and is best suited to a couple where one person works with our food buisness and the other person has their own income (or where both people share the responsibilities of the work requirements). The studio is clean, open concept, with plenty of storage and a bedroom/bathroom in the back. It has a woodstove and you will be responsible for the cost of your own wood, however we can certainly point you to the right people to get a load of firewood.
Some interest and involvement in land-based projects is very desirable, however we do not offer formal or structured education. The land projects are not part of the rent trade, but rather an opportunity to participate in homesteading and organic gardening for the sake of learning new skills, enjoying the beautiful outdoors and eating garden fresh produce. Land projects may include compost-building, irrigation, cover cropping, soil building, weeding, harvesting, seed-saving, tending to our small flock of chickens, etc. Time spent on land projects is flexible.
Work days involve preparing our organic sprouts for farmers markets and wholesale clients on and off island. The work takes place indoors and in a relaxed, music-infused commercial kitchen environment. You will be primarily packaging sprouts into individual market units and for larger wholesale accounts, harvesting microgreens and preparing our delicious "sprout rolls" for the farmers markets we attend. Work days typically average about 6 hours in length. We attend 4 farmers markets per week and have wholesale clients on Salt Spring, in Victoria and the Cowichan Valley.
A little about us:
We are a young family of three (ourselves and our 7 year old daughter, who is being homeschooled). We love plants!! We also love practicing homesteading skills like growing, building, foraging, and preserving. We love hiking and enjoying the beautiful island we live on. We get quite busy in the summer and so we work well with folks who are self-directed and who feel comfortable catching us in the gardens and asking for opportunities to learn and participate. We also love getting into thought-provoking conversation about culture, politics, ecology, etc. while working together in the kitchen.
Specific qualities we are seeking in applicants include:
Positivity, ease in working with/sharing space with others, fast and efficent work-habbit, organizational skills, ability to perform physical tasks in the gardens like digging, pushing heavy wheel barrows, turning compost, etc., someone with a passion for health, wellness, nature, community building and homesteading.
