ORGANIC VEGGIE FARMING

Position: Lead farm hand
Farm: Grey Wolf Gardens

Location: Cochrane, Northern Ontario
Housing: private on-farm accommodations (+ use of the farm truck for town trips)

We are looking for a lead field hand for the 2024 season!

Come be a part of the team at Grey Wolf Gardens and experience what organic vegetable farming is like in the sub-Arctic.

Who we are: Grey Wolf Gardens is a small organic (non-certified) vegetable farm in Cochrane Ontario going into our second year of production in 2024. The farm is owned and operated by husband and wife team Luke and Eva Dinan. Luke has been growing professionally for 10 years, and is the primary farmer. Eva provides a critical support role on the farm while managing the farm house and raising their 1 year old son. Eva is also a certified herbalist who creates a number of herbal products for sale along with the farm's produce.

What we do: We grow a large variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as culinary and medicinal herbs and flowers. We follow organic and regenerative practices with a focus on soil health to maximize the nutrient density of our produce. We market our produce at two local Farmer's markets and we supply two local restaurants. We are also going into our fourth year running a fresh food program with the Ininew Friendship Centre which includes a 20 family CSA as well as maintaining a demonstration garden on the Cultural Grounds, where members of the Taykwa Tagamou Indigenous community practice their traditional activities.

Who we are looking for: the ideal team member has 2-3 years experience on other mixed vegetable market garden-style farms, has a passion for local high quality food and wants to experience what farming looks like in the sub-arctic. Experience with BCS tractors and implements and the paper pot system is an asset. Having a driver's license is also strongly preferred but exceptions could be made for the right person.

What we are offering: we offer an hourly wage of $20 as well as private on-farm accommodations, use of the farm truck for town trips, and no-charge produce off the farm. Work hours are between 40 and 60 hours a week, and 5 - 6 days per week depending on time of year. Other learning opportunities include herbal medicine making and the chance to spend time with and around members of the Taykwa Tagamou nation while they conduct traditional activities like smoking and preparing meat and hides.

If the opportunity to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish the task of growing high quality food in the North while working closely with the local Indigenous community sounds like a good time, get in touch with us!
