Position: Education Outreach Program Coordinator

$18 an hour / 30 hrs per week. From June 3rd to September 1st, 2024

Garden at Kimbourne is seeking an Education Outreach Program Coordinator to support our mission to grow food and grow community in East Toronto using environmentally responsible permaculture methods.

Duties:

  • Leads and supports volunteers, including children, youth, adults and seniors, in planting, maintenance and harvesting of food.
  • Facilitates gardening sessions for members on Sundays, Wednesdays and a few special days (to be determined).
  • Works with the Garden at Kimbourne Planning Committee to plan and execute workshops and events (both in-person and online).
  • Communicates with other area gardens, social justice and neighbourhood organizations via email and social media to foster new connections.
  • Fosters community engagement and environmental awareness online through preparation and production of Garden at Kimbourne e-newsletter, blog and social media.
  • Practices close observation of the garden and maintains garden log and records by taking regular notes of patterns and changes; mentor and instruct volunteers in permaculture observation strategies.
  • Responding to observations of the garden, assists the Coordinators in developing and sharing task lists for volunteers.
  • Assists with promotion and execution of the garden and special events, including social media.
  • Cleans and maintains all garden tools and equipment.
  • Follows all relevant provincial health and safety and local public health guidelines and ensures that volunteers are also following these guidelines.
  • Other duties as required.

NOTE: Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 and meet eligibility criteria for the 2024 Canada Summer Jobs program. Preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary program with a focus on: horticulture, agriculture, botany, agrology, environmental studies, food studies, etc. Students in other fields and high school students who have gardening knowledge and experience and interest in community gardening will also be favourably considered.

Hours will be divided between on-site hands-on work in the garden and event planning and communications work which will be done from home.
