Join the Board of Directors

Positions: Non-Profit Board Members / Board of Directors
Organization: Sorauren Farmers’ Market Association (SFMA)
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Commitment: 8–12 meetings per year + 1–4 hours/month
Type: Volunteer, two-year renewable term

About the Sorauren Farmers’ Market Association

Since 2008, the Sorauren Farmers’ Market Association (SFMA) has been a welcoming hub for local food and community connection. As a registered non-profit organization, we support sustainable farmers and producers and foster important dialogue around farming, food systems, and healthy eating.

Our market operates year-round, with the summer season at Sorauren Park and winter season at Henderson Brewing, and continues to grow as a vital part of the city’s local food ecosystem.

The Role: Board of Directors

The Board of Directors governs SFMA’s mission, strategy, and financial sustainability. Working in partnership with our Executive Director, board members focus on governance, fundraising, community engagement, and strategic planning. We are currently seeking new directors, including one who will take on the role of Board Secretary.

1. General Board Members

We are looking for individuals who bring energy, curiosity, and a commitment to community food systems.

Preferred competencies we’re looking to build on our board (no need to have them all — if one or two speak to you, that’s great!):

  • Grant research and writing
  • Fundraising or sponsorship development
  • Event planning or community engagement
  • Communications or marketing
  • Project management
  • Non-profit governance or board experience
  • Experience as a farmer, producer, or market vendor

We value diverse voices, backgrounds, and perspectives—and encourage community members, farmers, food producers, vendors, and people from equity-deserving groups to apply.

2. Board Secretary (Specific Role)

We are also seeking a Board Secretary, an Officer role defined in our bylaws. This person will:

  • Support strong governance by ensuring accurate record-keeping of board and member meetings;
  • Manage and maintain corporate documents (minutes, bylaws, policies, filings);
  • Issue meeting notices and maintain the official director registry;
  • Support in board communications and scheduling.

This role is ideal for someone organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about good governance. Previous experience with non-profit boards or administrative coordination is an asset but not required.

Time Commitment

  • Board meetings: 8–12 per year (typically one hour each, virtual)
  • Additional work: 1–4 hours per month for preparation or initiatives
  • Our Executive Director manages all day-to-day operations; board members focus on governance, strategy, and support.

As a director, you’ll:

  • Help shape the future of a thriving community market and local food ecosystem.
  • Gain valuable non-profit board experience in a collaborative, inclusive environment.
