The Farmlands Trust (Greater Victoria) Society (“FLT”)

Board Role Description - Director - Volunteers & Community

The Volunteers & Community Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to build and maintain positive relationships between FLT and the community from which it draws and sources its volunteer base. Overseeing all aspects of FLT’s volunteer program, including recruitment, scheduling, and retention of volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment - Developing strategies to recruit and retain a network of reliable business and community volunteers that includes individuals, businesses, non-profit / charitable organizations, and schools / students.
  • Volunteer Management - With the Farm Manager, coordinating volunteer schedules, posting openings on volunteer job board.
  • Engagement and Retention - Implementing strategies to keep volunteers motivated and committed, recognizing their contributions, and fostering a positive volunteer experience. Plans and delivers volunteer appreciation & community day events.
  • Administration - Maintaining accurate records of volunteer information, hours, and accomplishments. Drafting and posting position roles on various platforms. Drafting of various HR policies and documenting task procedures and work instructions.
  • Communication - Acting as a liaison between volunteers, Farm Manager, and the Board, developing campaigns to promote volunteer opportunities, and maintaining regular contact with volunteers for feedback and satisfaction.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Deep desire to
    • Protect and preserve farmlands,

    • Provide education and learning opportunities to the community, and

    • Relieve food insecurity.

  • Farming or gardening experience, i.e., seeding, planting, cultivating, harvesting.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in a collaborative Google workspace environment, database creation and management, use of volunteer scheduling and sign-up tools, and posting to job boards and social media.
  • 2-3 years experience in a related field, i.e., HR, community liaison, or relationship management.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Preference will be given to candidates from equity deserving groups.
