Posting: Native Bee Stewardship Specialist (2-Year Full-Time Position)
Organization: Alberta Native Bee Council
Location: Remote from anywhere in Alberta
Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week), until spring 2027 with the possibility of extension, pending funding

The Alberta Native Bee Council (ANBC) is hiring a Native Bee Stewardship Specialist to support our mission of conserving native pollinators and promoting sustainable land stewardship across Alberta. This newly created, full-time, two-year term position offers flexible remote work and the opportunity to contribute to innovative, science-based conservation efforts throughout the province.

About the Role

The Native Bee Stewardship Specialist will support ANBC’s efforts to conserve native pollinators by leading work on assessing native bee biodiversity and climate resilience in Alberta’s rangelands. This role involves analyzing native bee monitoring data in relation to land use and climate projections, identifying species and ecosystems at risk, and developing science-based best management practices to support pollinator conservation. The Specialist will also contribute to the development of practical, accessible resources to help individuals and communities create and maintain bee-friendly habitat and assist with other ANBC programs as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the management of a grant-funded project, including coordinating activities to ensure deliverables are achieved on schedule, monitoring and tracking the project budget, and preparing and submitting all required progress and final reports to funders.
  • Integrate biodiversity data from native bee surveys with geospatial datasets (e.g., landcover, climate) to assess species diversity across Alberta’s landscapes.
  • Evaluate the potential impacts of climate change on native bee populations and help identify strategies to enhance the resilience of pollinator communities in vulnerable ecosystems.
  • Develop evidence-based best management practices for landowners and producers to support pollinator conservation.
  • Conduct literature reviews to identify regionally appropriate native plant species, their growth and habitat requirements, costs, maintenance needs, and pollinator value.
  • Engage directly with landowners, agricultural producers, and land managers to share project findings and gather feedback on the practicality and adoption of recommended conservation practices.
  • Coordinate and deliver outreach activities—including workshops, presentations, field days, and online events—to raise awareness of Alberta’s native bees and promote stewardship actions.
  • Represent ANBC at meetings, events, or workshops, and contribute to broader pollinator outreach initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in ecology, conservation biology, or a related discipline.
  • Greater than 2 years working in the field of resource management.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis and data management, with demonstrated experience analyzing ecological or environmental data.
  • Experience with scientific literature reviews and stewardship-focused conservation work.
  • Comfortable working remotely and building relationships with a variety of partners, stakeholders, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in ecology, conservation biology, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced programming skills in languages used in analyzing biodiversity data (e.g., R, Python).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate scientific information for diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently as a self-starter, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility in dynamic environments while consistently meeting deadlines and adjusting to
  • shifting priorities.
