Job Opportunity with Roots CFC

Position: Manager - Community Food Markets
Organization: Roots Community Food Centre
Location: Thunder Bay, Ontario

This position will assist with multiple aspects of the organization but primarily the Community Food Markets and social enterprise products.

The Basics:

  • Job Term: Full time, permanent - Some weekend and evening work will be required (and organized ahead of time).
  • Start: After May 15th, before June 1st.
  • Wage: $25.00/hr; 40 hrs/week
  • Vacation and holiday time: 2 weeks paid vacation (accrues each pay period), 1 week paid time off between Christmas and New Year’s, 3 extra statutory holidays (National Indigenous People’s Day, Truth and Reconciliation Day, Easter Monday).
  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package paid 100% by Roots CFC after 3 months. After 1 year, the option to opt into a group savings plan through RBC – RRSP or TFSA options – Roots matches up to 2% in the first year and increases over time.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate food ordering, procurement and inventory for 6 or more weekly food markets;
  • Record keeping, price comparisons and tracking;
  • Operate onsite and offsite local Community Food Market locations;
  • Manage and trouble shoot point-of-sale systems locally and remotely;
  • Training community members and volunteers on point-of-sale systems and market processes;
  • Communicate with and support remote Community Food Markets;
  • Periodic evaluation of Community Food Market impacts;
  • Establish and maintain a welcoming space and atmosphere for community members;
  • As needed, help to coordinate and fulfill social purpose enterprise food activities such as granola, canning and preserves and apple cider;
  • Assist kitchen team with kitchen maintenance and upkeep;
  • Assist in wholesaling social enterprise and garden produce;
  • Assist the programs and teams to operate and maintain urban farm spaces;
  • Work closely with program facilitators to deliver community food programs

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with others, including in a facilitation role;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds etc);
  • Effective communication and organizational skills;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Experience with point-of-sale systems, excel-sheet tracking, report writing an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve in the moment;
  • Valid Class G drivers license with a clean driving record and access to a reliable vehicle;
  • Current safe food handling and first aid certification (or willingness to get) within the first three months of employment;
  • Up to date Covid-19 vaccination record;
  • Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly
