Position: Garden and Education Assistant

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organization that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for over 30 years. The Society runs demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz BC.

We have an exciting opportunity at our Tsawwassen location for an articulate and energetic individual who is passionate about addressing food security issues and wants to make a real difference in our community. Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the garden and education assistant will be responsible for the following:

Duties and responsibilities:

• Assist with the maintenance of the Earthwise Garden as a venue for educational and community programming
• Ensure that plantings are healthy and that the space is welcoming and attractive to garden visitors
• As part of a team, implement an outreach plan to increase community engagement, assist with special events and community presentations
• Assist with the delivery of hands-on adult education programs on gardening and sustainable land use
• Deliver ecotours and other environmental educational workshops for school children
• Assist with the delivery of therapeutic horticulture programs at the Earthwise Garden
• Assist with retail initiatives including nursery, floral, and produce sales, including plant propagation, inventory, displays, and labeling
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Be a current a full-time student who will be returning to college or university in the fall
• Be self-motivated, flexible, willing to take initiative, work well both independently and in a team environment
• Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
• Possess proven ability of working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident (Service Canada requirement)

This is a full-time position 35 hours per week paid at the rate of $18.25/hr. Weekend and the occasional evening work will be required. The initial term of employment is for 9 weeks with the possibility of extension based on funding.
