About the program

The focus of grant funding and the program is to support individuals who are recipients or eligible to receive income or disability assistance and who may have barriers to labour market participation.

To be considered for a position, and due to the nature of the grants, applicants must be:

  • BCEA recipient or qualified to receive assistance under the Employment and Assistance Act; or
  • On disability assistance or qualified to receive assistance under the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act; or
  • Hardship Assistance (HA) recipients
  • Income assistance through the Person with Persistent Multiple Barriers to Employment (PPMB) benefit
  • Qualified to receive assistance from a Treaty First Nation that is funded through the Federal Department of Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada; or o Qualified to receive assistance from a First Nation Administering Authority that administers an Income Assistance Program on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada.
  • Each participant must be legally able to work in British Columbia.
  • Indigenous people receiving equivalent federal assistance, can participate in work experience projects that occur only on Indigenous reserves or Treaty Lands.
  • Individuals who have previously completed a work experience placement through the Work Experience Opportunities Grant may participate again in limited circumstances.

Note: applicants do not need to be actively in receipt of income or disability assistance payments from the BC Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation (see BC social supports eligibility) or the Government of Canada.

For applicants who are receiving income assistance, the stipend associated with this position is exempt from BC income eligibility calculations and will not affect the eligibility of individuals participating. Individuals will need to report income earned through the WEOG program for tracking purposes.

About the contractor position

Research Assistant - 1 position available

The Research Assistant will work closely with our Leadership Team to continue the transformative anti-racism and equity-focused work within the Good Food Network (GFN) and the Youth Food Network (YFN), addressing systemic barriers and fostering inclusive governance, operations, and activities. The position involves gathering information via research and interviews, supporting report writing and layout, assisting with logistics and scheduling, organizing resources, and helping track progress.

Ideal candidates value flexible schedules and thrive in collaborative unstructured work environments. Comfortable with in person settings and with making phone calls (occasional).

  • Start date: January 12, 2026 (or as early as possible)
  • End date: April 3, 2026
  • Length: 12 weeks
  • Hours: 8 hrs / week (Total of 96 hours)
  • Total Stipend: $1,800 (paid in 6 installments of $300 over the placement term)

Physical Effort: Sit with arms unsupported while typing (computer work), reading from a computer screen.

Mental and Sensory Effort: Focused work, work alone with limited supervision, engage with the public via email and phone calls. Attend meetings in person and via video conference.

Work Environment: Office setting mostly from home office (often); event venues (occasional)
