Market Garden/ Farm/ Homestead

Role: Market Farm Partnership
Location: Mount Albert, near Newmarket / York Region, Ontario

I am posting here with an interesting opportunity for the right person/people.

I live here in Mount Albert in a 4-generation house on a 47-acre plot of swamp land. We have a modern house, but I am trying to create a self sustainable homestead. Ideally, I would make my own compost, grow my own food, mill my own wood, etc. but I could use some like-minded help.

There are lots of opportunities for projects here, I would like to created a heated rain barrel system, in-ground compost pits, a cold cellar and a greenhouse. There is also the potential to get into making and selling our own farm tools as I am a CWB welder. We have a few fiber animals and a spinning wheel. We also have a growing seed library, and I have toyed with the idea of creating a cranberry crop, a flower farm, and a natural plant dye company.

I have a half acre garden with fruit and nut trees, and many birds that provide us with a variety of eggs. We are doing ok with the maintenance of the farm as it is, but I would like to take it to the next level and start turning a small profit at a farm stand, market, or through social media (which is not my thing).

The ideal person would be someone who loves farming but doesn’t have land of their own. An entrepreneurial spirit is a must, and a massive ability to be creative and find opportunities where others may not. What we can provide you with is the opportunity to build on our current ideas, get involved in a way that feels meaningful to you, pursue your interests, and collaborate in an attempt to create a functional profitable farm. I would also be open to someone who wants to keep bees in the back 40, or create their own garden plot for personal consumption.

The fine print is that we are vegan and very devoted to the safety and security of our animals. You don’t have to be vegan to work with us but you must love animals and have the same philosophy around their care. This would be akin to the treatment they would receive at a sanctuary – no exploitation, reproduction, or sale of animals. That being said, if there is extra wool, eggs, or honey, I would like to utilize these resources as animal care is expensive.

At this time I cannot pay a farm worker. The correct person would come here with the hope of learning how to turn a profit together. We are very honest people. We would never exploit volunteer labour. If we are making profit, you are making profit. I would ideally like a situation where incoming money is split. Not only is this fair, but It will also entice the excitement that we may be able to make a living here one day together. Isn’t that the dream!?

A devotion to limited machinery, and old-fashioned techniques is preferred. Hours would be so flexible. You could spend every day here, or once every couple of weeks. I am very open to discussions on what successful partnership may look to you. Having your own transportation is a must as there is no volunteer accomodations here at the farm. Couples welcome, children welcome.

No question is a bad question. Please reach out if anything is unclear.
Apply through e-mail. No resume necessary just outline who you are, your interest, and experiance level.
